Does windows 7 will work with dell dimension 4700?
I have a dell dimension 4700. I had to replace the hard drive because it brokee down.
I found a great deal of windows 7 for only $30 and i was wondering if it will work with dell dimension 4700.
Please advise

great idea...but can I do this if the hard drive is totally new? and i do not have any operation system installed?

Hi, Here is the system requirements to run Win 7, nearly all systems have it.
Windows 7 system requirements
If you want to run Windows 7 on your PC, here's what it takes:
1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor
1 gigabyte (GB) RAM (32-bit) or 2 GB RAM (64-bit)
16 GB available hard disk space (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit)
DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver
Additional requirements to use certain features:
Internet access (fees may apply)
Depending on resolution, video playback may require additional memory and advanced graphics hardware
Some games and programs might require a graphics card compatible with DirectX 10 or higher for optimal performance
For some Windows Media Center functionality a TV tuner and additional hardware may be required
Windows Touch and Tablet PCs require specific hardware
HomeGroup requires a network and PCs running Windows 7

I have WIndows 7 running on a Dimension 4700, just make sure you have at least 1 GB of RAM.

Are you running 32-bit, or 64? I have the Pentium 4 (Prescott) 670; 3.8GHz (64 bit) processor installed. I also have a 480 watt PSU as well. My current GPU is a ATI HD 4670. I'm just looking into getting a nicer card that can utilize the 480 watts respectively; and if I should upgrade to Windows 7; 64 bit for the utilization of the 4GB RAM.

Are you running a Dell4700 with the Pent 4 670? According to Dell's specs, you can only put in up to Prescott 570 3.8 Ghz.

Sorry for the delayed response. But yes, I am running the Pentium 4, 670; 3.8GHz processor. I works great.

Dell does not update their documentation, and the system was launched in 2004, so the documentation does not reflect changes/updates since 2004. BIOS version A10 "added support for newer processors" and was released 1/2006. The 670 was launched by Intel the quarter before that release, which does not necessarily mean it will work, but it would not be unusual for it to work. Theoretically, any of the processors supported by that chipset could work with the latest BIOS code:

The real question is, does it work with Windows 8??? I've had massive problems getting Windows 8 onto this system for my in-laws. Seems the problem is the bios doesn't have a way to enable "XD" which is required during the upgrade. Windows 7 runs fine and there's no indication of an issue in the upgrade advisor, but the final stages of the installation give you error "0x0000005D" Painful...
