ERROR Message?

I have a Dimension 9150 with XP home edition, intel pentium 4. Last night I installed the new Dell Supprt Centre, this morning when I turned the computer on I got an error message saying:

sprtcmd.exe - Entry point not found
Procedure entry point DoOpenPipeStream could not be located in the dynamic link library ScrRun.dll.

When I tried to use the Dell Support Centre which worked fine last night, it now says:

This content is no longer available.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Not an elegant solution, but you could just uninstall the support center and then download and install it again.

Otherwise, Google says this:

If you get an error when you run a script on Windows XP that looks like this: "The procedure entry point DoOpenPipeStream could not be located in the dynamic link library ScrRun.dll" you can easily solve this problem.

It's very likely that some other application you have installed put an older version of scrrun.dll on your system, causing this error. There is likely an older version in an applications directory (under Program Files) or in the C:\Windows\system directory. You should be able to safely rename the file to something else. Restart the program/script causing the error and the issue may be solved if not continue on.

The file version in %windir%\system32 should still be the correct one (it's a protected file, so it shouldn't have been overwritten), so you can probably just re-register it and all should be well.Type "regsvr32 scrrun.dll" from any command prompt. The version number on that file should be 5.6.0.6626.

Samgill,

It does appear that the error message being reported is indeed due to a corrupt or old version of scrrun.dll so the suggestion by Alexandra should resolve the problem.

After uninstalling Dell Support Center and running "regsvr32 %SystemRoot%\system32\scrrun.dll", please use this link to ensure you download the latest version of DSC: http://www.dell.com/dellsupportcenter/

If you have any further problems, please let me know.

Thank you both very much for your help.

Now I'm rather embarassed to have to admit this but you both said to do the same thing and I just need to check with you that I have understood correctly what I am supposed to do!

Yes, I know how to delete the Dell Support Centre programme but I'm not sure about the next bit where you say to run "regsvr32 %SystemRoot%\system32\scrrun.dll" Do you mean I type this into the "Run" box and do I do it before or after I delete the Dell program?

When I downloaded the Dell program last night I did it through the connection that came up on my desktop from the Dell Support box. Would this be the same version you get with the adress you have given me? If so I'm a bit nervous about downloading it at all as I've never had problems like this before.

Your help is much appreciated,

Thank you so much for itemising what I need to do, I was just a bit worried that I might do something wrong and make the whole thing worse!!

I shall go and try it right now and many thanks for your offer of further help if needed, I have to admit that I was beginning to regret having pressed that download button, but hopefully it will all be ok now.

Thank you DSC_Expert

Samgill,

no need to be embarassed :smileyhappy:

Here is what you do on a XP machine to register the dll:

1) Click on Start
2) Click on run
3) Type in regsvr32 %SystemRoot%\system32\scrrun.dll
4) Click ok

Here is what you do to uninstall Dell Support Center:

1) Click on Start
2) Click on Control Panel
3) Double click on "Add or Remove Programs"
4) Highilght the Dell Support Center entry
5) Click remove and follow the prompts

This will download and install the latest version of Dell Support Center. The issues that you are seeing are most likely because of the corrupt dll, so after performing these steps, it should work fine. If not, we will troubleshoot further.

Minor correction on the last paragraph. I meant to say:

Going to http://www.dell.com/DellSupportCenter/ will allow you to download and install the latest version of Dell Support Center. The issues that you are seeing are most likely because of the corrupt dll, so after performing these steps, it should work fine. If not, we will troubleshoot further.

DSC's got you covered, but I'll just jump in and be obnoxious anyway :) .  The Dell Support Center is convenient,  but if you don't mind doing your own PC maintenance the old-fashioned way you really don't need it.    Entirely up to you - I tried it but got rid of it a while ago, others like it a lot.

PS - just a thought - did you already have an older version that came with your PC? (if you had it, it'd be version 3.xx).  Can't say if that's the cause of the problem, but the new and old don't play well together....

Thank you Alexandra_P, yes my computer did have the old version on, it was the old one that popped up asking if I wanted to get the new one. I really wish that I had just clicked "no" as I usually do!
I have now deleted/removed the new Dell support center, but when I tried to run the "regsvr32 scrrun.dll" I got this message..........

"windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permission to access the item"

I was just going to reply to DSC but as your message just came in I thought I would ask you as well?

I don't think I'll ever upgrade anything again!!!
Many thanks.

Had a thought last night - can you just do a system restore to a couple days ago?  Then you can just forget the whole thing ever happened.

As for the access problem - if you're the administrator on that PC, it should work - but it's possible either XP Home or maybe your antivirus software is restricting your access.

Are you still getting the error after removing DSC and rebooting?

Alexandra_P and DSC_Expert, thank you both so much for all your help.

I've just got back from work, switched my computer on and brilliant....no error messages!!!

Last night after I deleted DSC and couldn't run the regsvr32 and was still getting the same error message, I ran the system restore to a point before I installed this nuisance program and just like magic everything went back to how it should be!

I really do appreciate the help you have both given me.

Many thanks
