How can I re-install Windows XP without the CD?
Hi
Back in 2007, my L atitude D420 came with WIndows XP Pro pre-installed. The machine has finally become so slow that I decided to try to flaten the hard drive and re-install the OS. However, althouigh I have the product key, I do not have the installation discs. I have tried re-ionstalling from the C:\i386 directory, but there seem to be several key files missing or corrupted and the resulting installation is useless (I can't even set up a network connection). Re-installing from the hard drive also meant I could not first wipe the disk.
Is it possible to get hold of a copy of the installation disc? The WIndows website suggest that I should be able to get one from Dell ...
Any help would be much appreciated :)

You could try the form below, but I don't know what kind of results to tell you to expect with a dinosaur like XP:
support.dell.com/.../backupcd_form
Dell's responsibility to provide "replacement" media is not infinite, so there may be some kind of time limit on requesting these from Dell.
You can also borrow a Dell XP CD from someone or purchase a replacement on eBay ... in either case, it must be the same version - e.g. Home/Pro.
