How to change startup programs.

Can anyone tell me how to change startup programs in windows xp home edition? I have 2gb ram,500gb external hard drive, radeon x1550 graphics card,( Dell Dimension 3000). I can't seem to speed this thing up at all. and it should be running like a horse on fire. It should be a lot faster than it is. I'm also connected to the Internet by DSL. and that's slow, too. Thank you.

start > run > type "msconfig" > click on the startup tab and selec the programs u want to start when windows starts up. Dont deselect a program if you dont know what it is. (you can view the location to determine if u know what it is)

A useful guide to what startup programs are and whether you need them is:
