I joined the vista bandwagon
although, it's on a Compaq. I still have my 2 faithful Dells, with XP.
My take on Vista: Yeah, it's different, and because it's different (eye candy, effects) it was really exciting at first.
But it can be a headache. The security (even with UAC disabled) can be a blessing and a curse.
The reason I bought a Compaq was because of the price, and I was able to get it at my Wal-Mart.
Back when I bought my first Dell, in 2002, Dell allowed over the phone checks. Then they stopped that.
I got a debit card, but it has a $500 limit per day. So for my laptop I got in 2004, I had to send a check by next-day mail to Dell.
Don't even suggest credit cards. I don't qualify (always get turned down) and that's fine by me.
They are a ripoff anyway, charging interest, and service charges which makes your purchases cost more.
Yeah, Vista is alright and I enjoy something new.But if I had to go back to my old XP machines, I would.

I have had vista since August 2007. I love it I have never had a problem with it. I really can't figure out why so many people complain about it.

The only real problem I had was running a scheduled task, and I am the administrator, but I finally got it to work.
Also, sometimes you get the pop-up nag at startup of a legit program, saying it's "not digitally signed".
I found a work around for that, too. ( I had to unblock it, but I could not unblock it while it was still in program files, so I had to close the program, copy the problem .exe and unblock it on my desktop, THEN copy it back over to my program files)
I also said I would go back to XP IF I HAD TO.
Vista is too much fun to give up now.
My 6 year old Dell DT and 4 year old laptop are still working well.

Yeah, that is ridiculous. Even when the G4 forum (used to be Techtv) they kept everyone's post count.
Whatever, I found more help using Google than this forum. I just come here for old times sake.
There is no point helping people here, because you are thanked by losing your post count.
I got well over 10,000 posts in a few forums.
Oh, Happy Halloween :smileyhappy:
I like making vids.

When it comes to Vista it took me a while to get used to it after using XP since '02 (and Windows ME, 98, 95, 3.1 and DOS 6 and 5 before that). I've also been using Vista since August '07 (thanks to the sales tax holiday) and have had no software issues (only a rash of failed hardware for some unknown reason) but I haven't retired my XP system yet. It just doesn't get used as much as before. I think every operating system has pluses and minuses, well with the exception of Microsoft Bob :smileyhappy:, and that with any OS people will find something that can be improved or removed to make it more to their liking. I haven't tried Linux or its' variants or Apple's OS X yet but I'm guessing even those have their ups and downs.
In regard to number of posts, I don't really know what to think but I know that my satisfaction comes more from helping someone get their computer working and I think that's the case with everyone else that answers questions, isn't it?
Good old TechTV. Those were the good old days when that channel actually had shows of a technical nature. I guess it still does but the only show that I've recognized is Extended Play. It reminds me of the transition of MTV from a channel that showed only music videos (24 hours a day) to the mess that it has become. Ok, mess is my opinion of it but I know there are other people that agree.
Interesting video, msil217. I hadn't heard that Stones song before but I'm wondering about the AC/DC belt that the blonde is wearing. That is a belt, isn't it? What do you use to make the vids? Keep up the good work. Any chance we'll see Billy Thorpe's Children of the Sun?

That's supposed to be a shirt. But thanks, and you just gave me an idea for a song to download, (itunes, if available) . I don't know, I tend to make videos that I can visualize and put to video, but it's possible.
I use Windows movie maker, with effect add-ones.
As far as post count, some believe the more posts you have, the more "reliable" you are for advice. We all know that's not always true, it may also be a popularity contest. The ones that get the most votes get "elevated" or pro status. Cliques are everywhere, though. I don't believe in them, but many sheep, oops, I mean people, do.
If someone helps me, I don't care who it is. The one that provided the solution that works is the best for me.

"The security (even with UAC disabled)..."
While many people find UAC "annoying", and decide to turn it off, be advised that its security benefits, if "tolerated", are significant:
tests (as of May '08) have shown that no known ROOTKIT can "sneak" its way past UAC
http://www.pcworld.com/businesscenter/article/146256/vistas_despised_uac_nails_rootkits_tests_find.html
the article further points out that of 30 rootkits "thrown" at VISTA with UAC turned off, only 6 were able to get through.
the bottom line being that despite all its nuisances, Vista is much more secure than XP.
P.S. for what it's worth, i'm still using XP

I like Vista, despite the fact my computer did not come with a reinstall CD. (both my Dells did)
I made a copy of my recovery partition to 3 DVD's.
Also, I wanted to make a partition for my documents, pictures, and etc.
I took a chance and used a free program.(easus? or something like that. I had partition magic, but it was not Vista compatible) Of course, Vista would not boot. But Vista was able to repair itself without a CD or DVD. I was impressed!!! And IF my HD fails, hopefully my DVD's and/or Ghost image on my external HD will save me.
Since my Compaq seems not to have any place for a second internal HD, I got a USB 2.0 external Maxtor 500GB for $99.

I'm with you as well, Sandavis. Before I made the move to vista, I was a little scared after reading all the problems and bad things people had to say about it. I'm glad I didn't listen, because I love it. It's so much better and slicker than XP for my use. I've been using it for about 7 months and have had no OS issues. Both the 32bit and 64bit versions.
Part of it is because people don't like change. I imagine people hated and put down XP when it came out too.

I am delighted that many of you are having no problems with Vista, but the problems are well documented and real. Why else would Microsoft be so vocal already about providing a new operating system in 2009? Dell continues to offer XP in many of its small and large business systems, and they are selling briskly according to industry reports. For an individual user with modern peripherals, Vista can be fine, and more power to you. For others with many systems across several locations and older peripherals, it can be a great headache and a great expense to upgrade hardware and software when XP worked quite well. Cheers to all. :emotion-1:

Most of us are creatures of habbit. Breaking one can be very difficult. I have had my vista since its release in April 2007.[Mine was bought in Jan 2007 came with XP, when Dell was giving a promotion of VISTA upgrade disk -to be given away as and when vista os becomes available]
Through the help of Forum members in here, I managed to do a clean install of the VISTA using the upgrade disk. No regrets what so ever. VISTA so wonderful. Forum members are so helpful and great.
