Installing Windows XP Pro

I have a Dell Dimension 4100 with Windows ME. I want to do a clean install of Windows XP Pro.

I've never done this before, and would like step-by-step instructions that are easy to follow. Can someone provide this, or point me to a good website.

Many thanks.

look at the instructions in dell support/ solutions/ reinstall guide.. (click "solutions", above) you will have to "select" a dell model computer that comes with win xp factory installed to be able to access the information in dell support for installing win xp.. for example, you could select "8300", then go to "solutions", then reinstall guide (for instructions on how to install win xp).. for installing other things on your 4100 like audio drivers, video drivers, etc, you should "select" the model 4100 to access the instructions for that (if necessary).. also, look at "downloads" for your 4100; maybe there are some updated drivers for your video and/or audio, etc.. it is important to have a firewall running before reconnecting to the internet after installing win xp.. you can use the "internet connection firewall", or you can save a firewall to disks (i use floppy disks), and install if from the disks before connecting to the internet.. without a firewall running, you will be vulnerable to the msblaster worm and the sasser worm.. after you have installed win xp, look in win xp's "help and support" (start/ help and support), in the index,  for "internet connection firewall" for instructions on how to enable it (at least temporarily, until you have a substitute) if you are using aol, the internet connection firewall is not compatible with aol, so you should save a firewall to disks, but if you cannot manage to do that, you can try using the aol browser (not internet explorer) to go to a website and download and install a firewall.. of course, if you have a mcafee or norton firewall on a disk along with your av program, you can install that.

you may need to adjust your bios settings, moving the cd-rom drive up to "first boot device" so as to be able to boot from the win xp cd, to do a clean install of win xp.. to access the bios settings, press the "delete" key as the computer is booting up (press the "F2" key on newer dells).  use the arrow keys to navigate to the boot panel, and then down to the cd-rom drive. then use the +(plus) and -(minus) keys to move the cd-rom drive up to "first boot device".. "exit and save changes".. reboot the computer with the win xp cd in the cd-rom drive.. after you reboot with the win xp cd in the cd-rom drive, you will see a message on the screen that says "press any key to boot from the cd".. press any key to boot from the cd.. then, just follow the simple prompts, deleting the partition(s) and creating a new partition, doing a full format with the NTFS file system.. don't get confused when it says that an existing partition already contains an operating system; just delete the partition and create a new one..
