Installing Windows XP on different PC

Can I install Windows XP on a computer that previously had Windows 98 (that is no longer working)?     I have a Compaq, which had 98 that has apparently died but would like to retrieve material from its hard drive.

If you're referring to a Windows XP CD that came with a Dell system, no.  Aside from the fact that it's tied to the Dell BIOS, installing it on another system without purchasing a license  (which costs about the same as just going out and buying a new Windows XP CD from the store) is a violation of the EULA.

SRABB,

Your best bet, if your hardware will permit it, is to install the hard drive from the Compaq into your Dell and copy the information you wish to save off of it there.
