Is it somehow possible to re install W7 on a new hdd if you have the original MS key.
I replaced a failed HDD on my 7 year old Dell XPS 9000 W7 desktop
I tried to restore my macrium backup file image but was not able to (Image verify failure)
Although I have the original W7 disc that came with the desktop, numerous attempts to use it to re install on the new hard drive have failed
I now must install a new OS on the new hdd.
I recently read somewhere that I can download an iso image of windows 10 and use my 25 digit W7 key to create a windows OS on a new hard drive.
Can anyone please chime in and tell me if this is in fact possible?
Thanks for your help!

Yes, Windows 7 keys will still work for Windows 10 -- that said, in what way did Windows 7 fail to install (if the system is running in RAID mode, you must pause the installer to insert the RAID drivers by means of a flash drive before Windows will find the drive).

idreos,
The Windows key code is for the specific copy of Windows 7 that is installed on the computer. Unfortunately, I do not think that will work. You can surely try and see if it will work.

Is this a system you purchased new from Dell, or as a used system? Is the license key on the label in the battery bay for Win 7 Pro?

If you have installed Windows 7 Pro and you have used Windows 7 Retail Media to perform a clean install and wish to activate it using Dell Windows 7 Pro OEM SLP follow the instructions here:
