MSN Messenger causes Windows 2000 to reboot - HELP!

Messenger (v7.0.0813) causes Windows 2000 pro 9v5.0.2195 SP4) to reboot every time messenget attempts to communicate over the internet.
Internet access using IE (v6.0.2800.1106) is ok when Messenger is not running.
When there is no active internet connection Messenger will run and allow access to functions that do not require one to be signed in. The system reboots as soon as an active internet connection is established when Messenger is running.
There are no Messenger add-ins installed.
