May I please just verify - Dimension 4500 systems WILL NOT have Win 7 drivers

We've just gotten a half dozen Dell Dimension 4500s donated and we've put on Win 7 on the first one.  Dev Mgr states that both the Ethernet Adapter and the Multimedia Adapter are missing their drivers.  I've visited the Dell driver site and there are drivers available but looks like this model stopped at XP.  This one's Dell ID is 8M51Q11.  Am I cooked as far as Win 7 is concerned?  Are these headed for the trash bin?  (Where is my Linux install....)  :-)

Dell does not specifically support Windows 7 on the 4500s, but that doesn't mean it won't work.  It simply means that Dell does not provide the drivers.  You can get drivers, in most cases:

- From the actual device manufacturer (Intel, Broadcom, etc.)

- From the download page of a system using the same or similar device that does support Windows 7

You'll just need to do some trial/error testing to figure out if you can find the drivers.

You might want to read a previous thread about this same topic.

Did you buy brand new Windows 7 licenses for all of these desktops? If so, I think they can be put to better use on newer PCs.

And yes, I would seriously consider installing Ubuntu on them.
