Memory Usage

I have an Optiplex GX50 with 256MB RAM, running WIN2K.  I have noticed my system performance seems to be degrading gradually, as well as increasingly warning that "system resources are low".

In Windows Task Manager's Performance tab, the Physical Memory monitor shows a maximum of 120 MB as "available" when there are no programs running.  (Also shows approx 98MB System Cache).  CPU Usage is at 0-2%.

Has something "reserved" much of my memory, thereby making less available for applications??

I do intend to upgrade to 512MB (system maximum), but want to make sure I'm getting full utilization of my memory.

Thanks!

How many icons do you have down next to the system clock? All of that is using your system memory. What you do not need disable or exit and see if that helps you with your memory problem. You may also want to post this to the windows board for 2000 for more support on this issue.

Yes, there are several programs that load automatically (another hassle I have which slows bootup).  However, I close these as well; still show large memory usage.

I have Norton Internet Security installed; I have heard that this is a system resource hog.  I have also closed all functions within this except anti-virus.

The operating system itself uses memory, even with all programs closed. Windows XP uses even more.

There is a small, free program, "Memory Viewer", that, when in use, looks like a very small thermometer showing your comps memory usage. It's interesting to watch it move as you open and close programs. Go to Google, and type in "mem viewer".
