My Rundll32.exe is constantly not responding when I shut down...?

Everytime I shutdown my laptop and windows xp I constantly receive a "rundll32.exe is not responding message" it attempts to end now but also fails to do so successfully. How can I fix this? and what is rundll32.exe?

Thank you

Is there anything more to the error message?  Which version of Windows are you running? What programs are running in the background when you go to shutdown?  If you do a cntrl-alt-delete just before you shut down and manually shut down one of the background programs, can you, determine which background program is causing the error.  Rundll32.exe is a program that allows .dll files to run as an application program.  It used by many different programs.  Have you eliminated all spyware and other malware from your system?  Many of these parasites can cause the error.

About every 5 posts on these forums has links to antispyware programs.  The first ones to use are:

http://www.lavasoft.de/index.html Ad-Aware

http://www.safer-networking.org/index.php?page=download  Spybot

Make sure you update the spyware definitions for each of these programs before running them, then allow them to delete all of the garbage that they find.  If these don't solve the problem, go to the following site and follow the directions to download and run the analysis tool called HijackThis.  Generate a log file, then open it and copy and paste the text of the log file in a message in the Virus Information and Removal forum where one of the HijackThis experts can offer advice on how to fix the problem:

Sorry in addition I'm running Windows XP, when I'm shutting down generally no other programs are up, I tried to look in my active applications but I don't notice anything running but I'm not very familiar with XP either. As far as active programs there are none running when i shut down, but the processes listed are many.
