NTLDR is missing - inspiron 1520

I'm stumpped! I had to replace my 'cd-dvd/rw. I have the 'reinstallation disk, but I can not get anything to happen when I insert it into the new drive. I have looked at several 'rescue sites', but none seem to address my problem.

What I see, when I start is:

   Loading PBR for descriptor 2...done.

   NTLDR is missing

   Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart

I have ran the diagnostics test and at the end it tell me that "this platform does not support WINDOWS.

I am lost!!! PLEASE HELP.

Re: NTLDR is missing - inspiron 1520

Hi oliver4life,

I would suggest you to drain the residual power from the laptop:

  • Disconnect any external peripherals (flash drives, printers, external hard drives) from the computer
  • Then remove the adapter
  • Remove the battery
  • Press and hold the power button for 10 seconds
  • Reconnect the battery and the adapter

You may run built in Dell diagnostics by following the steps below:

  • Reboot and tap <F12> to enter the Boot Menu
  • When the boot device list appears, highlight ‘Diagnostics’ and press <Enter>
  • The computer begins to run the Pre-boot System Assessment, a series of embedded diagnostics that perform initial testing on your system board, keyboard, hard drive, and display
  • In case any hardware component is bad, you will get a corresponding error

Please ensure the CD/DVD drive is getting detected in BIOS. You may follow the steps below:

  • Power on and tap <F2> 3-4 times to enter system setup.
  • Go to ‘Device Info’ listed under ‘System’
  • Please check ‘Modular Bay Devices’ for CD/DVD drive.

Keep me posted with the information. I will be glad to assist you further.

Thanks & Regards
