Reinstall XP because of Win32 virus

My son downloaded the Win32 virus/trojan.  I'm semi-techie and have been able to repartition the harddrive successfully in the past to reinstall the OS.  The last time I successfully did this was about 6 - 8 months ago.  This time, however, it gets to about 98% finished and won't go any farther.  I can do the "quick" option, but that doesn't get rid of the virus.  I don't think my harddrive is bad because it will let me install the OS without a complete wipe.  Any suggestions?

I am not sure why you feel the need to repartition the hard drive. During the install just do a format of the partition.

Because when that is done, the virus remains.  I've always understood repartitioning the hard drive would delete any hard-to-remove viruses.  It worked 6 months ago on another virus he downloaded, but now it won't finish.
