Studio 540 - No Updates?

Hi,

Dell Studio 540, Windows 7 SP1, Pro 64.

Am aware that support for Windows 7 has ended - yet this Dell machine has pending updates, plus perhaps over a year's worth - which do not appear at all?

The Windows update window just goes on forever & never downloads anything. There are also 'cancelled' updates shown, which I have never cancelled. Plus the dates conflict - documented 2020 attempts to update are matched by entries showing nothing happening since 2016. Makes no sense to me.

Have boot-scanned, everything okay.

Is this a BIOS issue?

Thanks.

If software won't run after being installed in Win 10, you can set its Compatibility Mode to Win 7 and that should solve most problems. Right-click the app's icon and select Properties. Click the Compatibility tab and check the box "Run in compatibility mode for..." and choose Win 7 from the drop-down list. If there still are issues, Win 10 is good at making changes to try to get that software to run.

If you don't use firewire, it's no great loss. But there are details on the web about installing a firewire driver that appears to work with Win 10.  And there are always add-in PCI-e firewire cards that are designed to work with Win 10.

As long as you have WIN7 COA you can use OEM system builder WIN10 DVD to install 10

Not supported does not mean not working.

You use the WIN7 drivers and it works fine.

Did you try running the Windows Update Troubleshooter that's built into Win 7?

Troubleshooter cleared several red x's except the last one - still no updates coming through.

More detail.

It also says the past problems were fixed - but the missing updates are still missing, & there is no download activity on restart.

Windows 7 has reached END OF LIFE.

Downloads and updates will not be forthcoming.

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/windows-7-end-of-life-support-information

As of January 14, 2020, your computer running Windows 7 will still function but Microsoft will no longer provide the following:

  • Technical support for any issues
  • Software updates
  • Security updates or fixes

Problems Installing Recent Updates;" Problems found and not fixed: 0X80070057 (2014-04-08-7-07_3-_09P)

These will now NEVER be fixed.

"Windows 7 has reached END OF LIFE."

Indeed, please refer to my original post.

Can my question then be addressed, for example, will all the missing updates ever appear - what was wrong with my updater? - or have all updates for Windows 7 now been discontinued, including older updates & those which failed to download?

If the latter, then I can stop worrying about the missing Windows 7 updates.

Many thanks.

will all the missing updates ever appear

No.  You can never update again.

- what was wrong with my updater? - or have all updates for Windows 7 now been discontinued,

everything for windows 98, ME, 2000, XP, Vista, 7, 8.0 is now GONE.

can stop worrying about the missing Windows 7 updates.  You should use the key from your windows 7 COA and update to 10.

If this system came with VISTA then you have to buy windows.

You cannot use Retail Windows 7 to update to 10.

$109 for home and $199 for pro.

This is good money after bad because you can get a system that is better and faster etc WITH Windows 10 for the same price as the software alone.

The Win7 540 supports FIREWIRE & runs software which will never be updated beyond Windows 7. Should I still upgrade to Windows 10 please?

Thank you.
