UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME

My Dell Inspiron 8500 will no longer boot up. It gives me 'UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME' error message.

Running diagnostics gives me a  DST SHORT TEST failure.  (Unit 0:  DST Log contains previous errors.  Code 1000-0146)

Running further diagnstics gives me IDE Disk S/N 448N4151T Read Test Failure.
Details give me Error Code 0F00:0244, Msg:  Block 6573979 'Uncorrectable Data Error or media is write protected'  Similar msg for Msg Block 6574676.  In addition, I got 'Address mark not found or media error' for Msg Block 6575386 and 6576103.  After this I aborted the diagnostics.

I also tried 'chkdsk /r' and had it stall out at 50-58% (one time it went to 75% and then jumped back down to 50% before stalling)

I also tried to run 'fixboot', but nothing seems to solve my problem.

Any ideas/help would be appreciated.

I have a Inspiron 2200 that I could hook up as a slave (although I would need instructions on how to do it).  About all I have on my 'damaged hard drive' that I would like to retrieve is my digital pictures.

Thanks for your help.

Then it sounds like the harddrive is corrupt or similar. Do You have an option to plug it in another computer as a slave to try and recover the bad sectors?

Try starting in Safe Mode.  Run an updated virus scan.  You nay have aquired a boot virus.  The bad news is that you have hopefully saved important work and can reformat and reload your software if there is no virus and the hard drive has not failed.   In Safe Mode, you may be able to do a system restore to a date when everything worked.

When I try to run SAFE MODE, the screen quickly fills up with

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\windows\system32\*

where '*' is different filename for each line of the scrolling display.

Does this give you any other ideas on what I may try?

Thanks,

Mike

The first message tells you that the hard drive has failed.  Buy a new one.

  • put in the Windows XP disk and booted to it.
  • At the “Welcome to Setup” page, I pressed “R” to get it into recovery mode.
  • At the dos prompt,  run check disk by typing “chkdsk C: /r” without the quotes and hit enter. (This will take a little bit)
  • Then type “fixboot” and hit enter. Press “Y” at the prompt, hit enter, and then type “exit” and hit enter.
  • That should fix your Computer. I have had that error so many times but it's always been fixable. I hope this helps!
