Vista 32bit / I bought Ultimate !

Why supply Vista 32bit when purchasing Vista Ultimate with a 64bit processor and RAM ???

I selected Vista Ultimate when purchasing my H2c thinking I would get Ultimate 64bit operating system for my 64 bit machine and all I get is poxy 32bit Ultimate .... that is a discrace ... if I had known I would not have bothered ordering it and got 64bit operating system from naffy old PC World ...

Well done Dell ... I am waiting for the clever comments from others ... here we go !

Please post your model of Dell, so others can help you.

If I paid for my dell with a debit card that I knew wasn't any good. Would dell just accept that and not want their money. I would think that if they sold a product that they knew wouldn't work its kind of the same thing is it not? Just thinking.

Well one, a 32bit operating system doesn't prevent 64bit applications from running.  That is a common misconception.  It just means that the OS is optimized around 32 bit registers.

The primary advantage of the 64bit OS for most users/applications is in addressing memory past 4gb memory.

The latest Microsoft Visual Studio C++ 32 bit compilers do not appear to generate 64 bit instructions nor will it recognize the complete 64 bit register set - I tried it.  Also the 64 bit instruction set is not a super set of the 32 bit instruction set.

It is a disgrace and I've started a thread over at arstechnica.com to warn others (check out the battlefront section in the forum). Your input would be valuable there because there are a lot of people who think it is a non-issue.

Anyway, in that thread there is one person who insists you can just buy a $7 64-Bit DVD through Windows Anytime Upgrade. It might be worth a shot!

It is a non-issue. When you purchase a machine with an OEM version of software, you get 32 bit, you also are not paying the 400 bucks that ultimate cost. When all the periferal mfgrs and programs design drivers to utliize the 64 bit string, then I'm sure the OEM pc builders will follow suite. Until then, it's a non-issue. Moot!!!

They are protecting themselves from people that will only suffer trying to get the 64 bit OS to work.  You would be much better off devoting your hostility to something that really matters.

   Good luck with your quest.
