Windows 7 "not genuine Windows" but it REALLY is!

Inspiron 1545 supplied with Windows 7 Home Premium and still running it, fully up to date.

Only significant change, HDD swapped for larger drive a few weeks ago. I used Clonezilla to clone the drive as a whole then resized the system partition and no problems were flagged up at the time.

A couple of days ago I started seeing a window entitled Windows Activation Technologies and saying "This computer is not running genuine Windows". There's an error code: 0x8004fe21

I see some people have solved this problem by reinstalling the Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver but the Intel site directs me to Dell. This particular driver doesn't seem to be available from Dell, or maybe it's not appropriate to this machine. Microsoft support also directed me to Dell. I've searched the forums but haven't found anything that applies to this particular scenario. Help please???

You can reset your Dell OEM SLP activation mechanism from factory settings/reinstallation DVD without complete reinstallation by using the ABR program with Dell files as instructed here:

Thanks Philip but before I go through that I'd like to check whether it will fix this particular situation, because in "View basic information about your computer" it says "Windows is activated".

I followed natakuc4's procedure up to the point where it said (roughly) "this system appears to already be activated, you might have to key in the product key after the next reboot" and being worried that something might go wrong I then cancelled it. If anyone can assure me that there's a good chance of this fixing my problem and little chance of it making things worse I will give it a try. Thanks for the help but I hope you understand why I'm cautious.

As mentioned it will restore the Dell factory activation. In some cases you seem to be activated and in others not hence the ABR program picks up the previous SLP key entered (which will be the same one in my guide). This should clear the current activation entirely and reset it using the mechanism of the factory settings. In the off-chance something goes wrong you can restore your image. This has solved similar issues to your own with Dell OEM installs.

OK, I've done it now and rebooted and everything seems OK but that message came up unpredictably so I won't know if it's fixed for a while. I'll report back either way.

That didn't do it I'm afraid. Just got the same message coming up again. Any other suggestions?

Kindly run MGA tool from the following link:

http://download.microsoft.com/download/9/F/3/9F3DED28-A521-4352-B8A4-20368D0CC1AA/MGADiag.exe

Then paste the complete result here.

Additionally, you can download and run the update from the below link and then try activating Windows:

Thanks but the problem is now solved (at least Windows updates are being downloaded) due to help received in the MS Answers forum (a valid link to the Intel Rapid Storage driver, all the previous ones I'd seen were broken and the Intel site suggests using OEM drivers).
