Windows Explorer does not work

I am using Windows XP.  I have a Dell Dimension 4600 desk top.  I use windows explorer to back up my data.  For some reason I can't open windows explorer.  Can someone help?
Thankyou.  John

If you are not using IE 7.0, try downloading it and install from the Microsoft download site. If you are using IE 7.0 now, you might try reinstalling it.

Can you access windows explorer in safe mode?

Have you run any scans?

Did you try system restore?

Tom,
Thanks for your answer.  I think you are on the right track.  I tried the system restore, it would only go back to June 7, 2007 and after running and restarting did not find any changes.  I did do a disk clean up but forgot when.  Is there a way to go back earlier than what the system wil allow?  I probably deleted some files in error when I did the disk clean up.  Also I discovered My Computor and Recycle Bin won't open either.  John .

Thank you.  The solution in the web site below worked.  You guys are good.  I would have never figured that one out.  Do you know how to get rid of a Smartbridge alert?
Regards,
John
