Windows XP home reinstall freezes

I need some help.

When trying to reinstall Windows XP home edition, the computer freezes soon after the first reboot (screen says 39 minutes remaining, never goes lower than that).

I have a Dimension 8200, 2.53 processor, 512mb of memory, DVD-rom, DVD burner.

Things I've tried with "help" from Dell support:

Cleared the NVRam.
Ran diagostics extensively.  Many loops, overnight.  Never any errors.
Replaced the CPU fan.
Removed ALL boards but the video card.
Hooked up a PS/2 keyboard and mouse in place of the wireless kb / mouse.
Put the CPU into compatibility mode (runs way slower, but still never below 39 min)

Upgrades to the computer that I've made since delivery:

Original system was 256mb of memory, added 256.
Replaced original CD burner with HP DVD burner.
Replaces original video card with a GeForce 6200 OC  (AGP, 256mb DDR)

Thanks in advance for any further ideas to get past this problem,
NCBarry

did ya ever check the cd? Sometimes they're cracked or just a solid scratch will let them go part way and then stall.

I've tried 2 Windows XP Home install CD's ... the non-Dell one was an upgrade disk from Windows 98 and I didn't expect it to complete since I can't find my Windows 98 CD, but it freezes in the exact same place as the Dell OS Installation CD.

could still be the harddrive. When you did the format was it a long format?

I deleted the hard drive partition, created a new one, reformatted using the long option, yes.

Also, before that, ran extensive diagnostics on the hard drive, as well as everything else.

you could try running dell's harddrive "debug"..

to do a "clean" install of win xp, you have to boot from the cd-rom drive with the win xp cd..

NCBarry,

You wrote, "Also, before that, ran extensive diagnostics on the hard drive, as well as everything else."

Did that include system memory?

A new disk drive solved my problem.

Thanks for everybody's help. :)
