Windows xp startup

Received a Dell 8400(used) as gift.  When new it had Win98(I think) WinXP was added later.  When I start the computer, I get a black text screen which tells me to press F1 to continue or F2 for set up.  What needs to be done to eliminate this so that it goes directly to WinXP?  Thanks.

If you are talking about the Dimension 8400, this model was originally delivered with Windows XP.  The message you report is usually associated with an error of some type, such as an error from the floppy disk drive.  If the floppy disk drive is the device triggering this report, the battery for the CMOS non-volatile memory has probably died and needs to be replaced.  After replacing the battery, start the computer, go to System Setup by pressing F2 during the self-test display, and turn the diskette drive Off, or Not Present, depending on which setting is available to you.  Most of these computers were delivered without this drive, which makes this error a common report.
