gdiplus.dll

Does sfc /scannow work in Vista. I have entered it in the search field and nogo. I get a error message from time to time of a missing gdiplus.dll and Vista will not complete its boot after selecting a user. Any Ideas where I could find this file compatible with Windows Vista 64bit. Or is this not a system dll file.

Thanks for the response. I did run sfc scannow and all check ok. I attempted to verfyfile but it would not recognize file for I believe the file is not present. For some reason windows explorer is requesting this file at start up. This is a intermittent problem for sometimes I boot without issue

Click the Start button and type command. Right click Command Prompt at the top of the left hand panel and choose Run as administrator. Type sfc /scannow at the prompt and press Enter.

I believe gdiplus.dll is present but is well hidden (protected). The security bulletin at this link states as follows:

The Microsoft Windows GDI+ API (Gdiplus.dll) is vulnerable to multiple buffer overflows that could result in remote code execution.

The Detailed Description mentions  that the threat applies to Windows Vista.

I just did a search for gdiplus.dll on my system running Windows Vista HP 32-bit and got 17 hits. I used Windows Explorer Advanced Search set to Everywhere, with a tick in the box beside Include non-indexed, hidden, and system files.

14 instances are in C:\Windows\winsxs

1 instance in C:\Program Files\Dell\MediaDirect\Kernel\Office\PTTView

1 instance in C:\Program Files\Dell\MediaDirect\Kernel\photo

1 instance in C:\Program Files\Common Files\Roxio Shared\9.0\Roxio Central33\Main

Obviously there is plenty of scope for trouble involving gdiplus.dll:smileysurprised:

1. Is the error message a recent happening?

2. I expect the Event Viewer logs will help diagnosis.

Well I looked into the log but could not find an event that stated this dll. The log was rather large. I could not figure out how to delete the log, for I did not see a delete, or when I right clicked on a event delete was not an option. The event viewer is very confusing. Event viewer has change quite a bit since the last time I use it, so I guess I am gonna have to look into the Windows Vista Resource kit and see what it can explain for me. Oh I tried to delete the log so I could start with fresh log, and then I could check right after the error occurred to see what it might say. I could not remember the last time it errored so I will have to wait until it errors again.

You need to right-click Event Viewer and choose Run as administrator to get Clear log... to appear on the Action menu.
