how to remove a "ghost" dell pre-installed mcafee AV

hi, m new here ;-)

this is my problem: my bitdefender AV is acting up, so i checked if there r conflicting AVs running @d same time. windows security says there is: mcafee firewall.

so i look 4 it in d all programms list: not listed

so i try windows uninstall list: not listed

so i dl d official mcafee deinstall program --> mcafee firewall still running.

now d mcafee website says that their deinstall program might not work on non-activated pre-installed mcafee programs. since i figure that it was pre-installed when i bought my inspiron 530, vista home premium, SP1 desktop, i want 2 activate it.

but how? if i can't even locate d program...

or do i need a complete different solution altogether?

thnx mucho 4 anykind of help

Hi bande.a.picsous and welcome to DCF,

It sounds like McAfee is no longer installed, use the search funtion to look for anything McAfee. If it turns out that you no longer have McAfee installed, then the reason McAfee Firewall is showing in Windows Security Center is that the repository needs to be reset. I not sure that this would be affecting Bitdefender though and that may be a different problem altogether.

To reset the repository:

1. Navigate to Start>All Programs>Accessories>Command Prompt, right click and run as Administrator.

2. A window with a black background appears
3. Type net stop winmgmt
4. Press the Enter key
5. Type CD\
6. Press the Enter key on your keyboard
7. Type cd %windir%\system32\wbem
8. Press the Enterkey
9. Type ren repository repository.old
10. Press the Enter key
11. Type net start winmgmt
12. Press the Enter key

Close and reboot.

hi red dawn,

thnx 4 answering so quickly.

i tried your very promising solution to get rid of the possible false positive at windows security.

but i must be doing something wrong because at step 5. Type CD\ in the command prompt, i get "this is an invalid response" as an answer.

should i still proceed with step 7?

thnx again.

p.s. i am also in touch with bd. they promised an email in the next 24h for d bd problem.

Hi bande.a.picsous,

Try it this way

Navigate to Start>All Programs>Accessories>Command Prompt, right click and run as Administrator.

Enter what's below:

net stop winmgmt [enter]

cd /d %windir%\system32\wbem [enter] (make sure to leave a space between cd and / and between the d and %)

ren repository repository.old [enter]

net start winmgmt [enter]

Close and reboot.

 .
