no icons just wall paper

My old horse of LATITUDE 600 with xp is nearly dead !

in normal get to the login  wll paper appears  Mc affee software flag past , digitising tablet /mouse   ok   then nothing but wall paper  get to crt/alt /del     with only option to log out or shut down  possible  . shut down.   rebout in safe mode : blank screen with safe mode on each corner   impossibble  to get command prompt either

pre diagnostic ok, post ok           look like the beast ineed a complete purge andreload of xp  with a unfortunate loss of data  written on nthe move the last ten day  and/ loaded sotware.

any idea how to save the data  (i normally back up but not on the move) ?
