"Blue screen of death" when shutting down Windows XP

I recently installed the Sim 3.  Initially, the computer would crash on occasion while playing the Sims.  After deleting some of the saved games, the computer no longer crashes and Windows seems to run fine (other than a "buffer overflow" on occasion which my McAfee warns me of).  However,  when I shut down my computer it gives me the ol' "blue screen of death" telling me that Windows has been stopped to protect my computer from damage.  The error message says to check for adequate disk space...which is certainly not an issue. It then gives me the bit about changing BIOS configurations and also says that if a driver is mentioned in the STOP message then I should disable the driver or update it.  The STOP message is as follows:  0X0000008E.    I also got an error message when restarting the computer once...I ran an error report and it said that the video card/driver was probably the cause.   There are no applicable updates on the Microsoft page for the video driver.

Thanks,

Shane

p.s. I have some system info below...the processor speed, RAM, and video card are all adequate according to the Sims 3 requirements (2 GHZ, 1 MB RAM, ATI RADEON X300 video card).

but I suspect it is related to the video card or driver since I got an error report while in Windows which mentioned the video card.  Help!

P.S.  Here is the dxdiag with all my system's info...

go HERE to get the latest video driver for your video card. With XP never use the microsoft driver updates for drivers. Always go to either the Dell driver and download page for your system or to the manufactores web site for them

No dice...it is still giving me the error.  Two thoughts...

1.   Once installing the driver update it has to reboot to take effect.  The problem is it never gets to reboot because of the Windows STOP error.  Could this be an issue?

2.   On the other thing I mentioned...I have been getting numerous (20-25 since 5/27) buffer overflow alerts from McAfee for various programs.  What would cause a bunch of buffer overflows all of the sudden  (the overflows were way before I installed my game)?

Thanks,

Shane

One thing I noticed while poking around (after i wrote the last message)...

Regarding buffer overflows, it is interesting that my McAfee caught a Trojan virus attempt on 5/27 at 4:39 Pm and the overflows started 5/27 at 4:49 PM...hmmm.

You may still be infected. Might want to go to the Virus/spyware board and post a hijack this log for them to analyize.
