re problem reinstalling

I tried to reinstall Win 98 (clean reinstall, hard drive sucessfully reformatted first) but after getting some distance into the reinstall I got the message MSGSRV 32 has performed an illegal operation and the system hangs
the machine is an Optiplex GX1
Pentium 2 processor
running win98
could anyone suggest how to fix it
