windows freezing on startup

hello,

i am running windows xp professional on a dell latitude D620

my problem: for the past couple weeks now, i almost consistently have had to start up my computer twice for it to run properly.  Upon the first startup, windows will load but then freeze before I am able to start any programs.  I am unable to restart it in any other way except to hold down the power button until it turns off, then turn it on a second time and then everything works fine.  I have no idea where to begin in resolving this problem. any help would be appreciated.

also: not caused virus/spyware, as i run protection software pretty regularly. also not overheating, etc. because the comp has no time time heat up.

thanks

c

cristeanna,

Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.

It could be another program loading at startup that is causing this to happen. Go to start - run and type in msconfig. Click the startup tab. What is listed?

thanks!

here's whats listed:

ZCfgSvc

ifrmewrk

stsystra

quickset

NvCpl

Nwiz

rundll32

NvMcTray

DVD Launcher

Apoint

UfSeAgnt

ZuneLauncher

Reader_sl

Communications_H... (it wont let me see the rest of this one's name)

Quickcam

jusched

dumprep

SpySweeperUI (this is my spyware protection program

DSAgnt

TMAS_OEMon

ctfmon

Clean Access Agent (this is my internet access for school)

Digital Line Detect

hp psc 1000 series (my printer)

hpoddt01.exe

Also: I tried unchecking a few of them yesterday (Quickcam and hp psc100 series) because they are rather unessential and I knew what they were to see if that helped, and my computer subsequntley kept starting up in something Utility mode (i cant remember exactly now).  I went back through and rechecked those programs and made sure Normal Startup was selected, but it still was starting in said Utility mode, I had to run a system restore to kick it back to Normal.  So I am a little aprehensive about fooling around more with the startup programs...

thanks again

rundll32

NvMcTray

DVD Launcher - Uncheck

Apoint

UfSeAgnt

Communications_H... (it wont let me see the rest of this one's name)

Quickcam - Uncheck

jusched

dumprep

SpySweeperUI (this is my spyware protection program

DSAgnt

TMAS_OEMon

ctfmon

Clean Access Agent (this is my internet access for school) -Uncehck

Try these first to see if that will help.
