XPS 8700, stock PSU, GTX 1070/Ti

Hello Dell community,

I own a Dell XPS 8700 with the 460W stock PSU, 16Gb RAM, core I7-4770  cpu.

I want to get a good gaming GPU that does not require upgrading my PSU, and currently I'm considering GTX 1060 or GTX 1070/1070-TI. I have 2 important questions about that upgrade ...

1) Has anyone in the community installed a GTX 1070 or 1070-TI on a Desktop equipped with the stock 460W PSU ? What are the results so far ? Is it performing consistently over time without overheating ?

2) Should I get a "Blower-style" video-card or equipped with open-air fans ? Many reviewers recommend "Blower-style" cards for the XPS8700 desktop tower because of poor ventilation. I'm particularly interested on the Zotac Mini series with 2 open-air fans and only Length=210mm.

Thanks a lot for the insight.

Recommended specs for the 1070 series are 500W PSUs. If you want to stay away from upgrading your PSU then go with the GTX 1060 with 6 GB of VRAM. You will save some money as well. For the 1060 series, 460W is more than enough power. Keep in mind that the 1060 also requires a 6 pin power plug but I believe you already have that. If not read the link...lots of pertinent information. Pay special attention to the post by Dan-H.

However more information regarding the upgrade and possible BIOS upgrades.

Thanks a lot for the feedback and all the tips on the original tread !

I will update my BIOS right way !

I understand that Nvidia's official recommendation is PSU=400W for GTX 1060 and PSU=500W for GTX 1070. However, the max Power consumption per graphic card suggests that PSU=460W might be just enough for the GTX 1070.

https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/products/10series/compare/

The max Power consumption for the mentioned cards is ...

PMAX_GTX1060 = 120W

PMAX_GTX1070 = 150W

Therefore delta_PMAX = 30W

If PSU=400W is enough to run GTX1060 in most systems, I'm still wondering why a PSU=460W wouldn't take care of an additional 30W load for a GTX1070.

Has anyone ever tried to use the GTX1070 with the XPS8700 stock CPU ?

Otherwise, what are the recommended 500W/600W PSUs that are compatible with the XPS 8700 desktop ?
