Studio XPS 9100, PSU replacement
I think that my PSU has died. I woke up this morning and my computer was not responsive.
When I tried to power on, there was a faint click and the rear cooling fan moved slightly. But, nothing else happened.
When I press on the PSU test button, I can hear the same faint click. But, no other response. I unplugged all of the peripherals but the computer was still not responsive.
I unplugged the hard drives and video card and still no response.
I am having trouble unplugging the main mobo power connector. Is there a trick to unplugging it? I don't want to force it off (in case I break the mobo).
I've seen some other postings on PSU replacement from 2015. The recommendation seems to be a Corsair CS750M - but this seems to be obsolete now. Will a CX750M Corsair be compatible?

There are so many PSU models and they all look the same to me. What do I need to specify when ordering one?

The 24 pin connector has a Squeeze latch to release it. Even with that squeezed its a tight fit. I sometimes use plastic spudger to wedge it open. If the PSU is really dead I also sometimes use wire cutter and just clip the latch off. DO NOT USE Metal screw driver to pull this you will poke a hole in the motherboard.
CX750M should be fine.

Thanks for the tips. I have a few more questions:
Based on my description of the symptoms, does it sound pretty certain that its a dead PSU?
There is a sale on the Corsair RMx PSU and I'm wondering if an RM 750x Corsair will do the trick:

The RM 750x has a 150 MW rating for 3.3v / 5.5v.

RM 750x is too long. Will not PHYSICALLY fit into the case.
The 750B1 from EVGA Barely fits but it does fit as does the CX750M
Power supplies are NOT single rating WATTS.
Dell Needs 150W on the 3.3v/5v Rails, 15 to 20W on the 5VSB Rail.
The lowest this goes is 142W on the Dell 460W power supply.
Combined max on Corsair 650M for example is 130W
Look at the Combined Power MAX for HX750 vs HX650.
Not Enough Power on the other Rails.

Thanks - I'm glad I checked.
The CX750M is on sale, too.
I gather it is better to go with the modular version of the CX750 because it's the same price and I am assuming that all the cable connections will be the same.

Yes but you can leave out the unused cables on the Modular version.

I just picked up the CX 750M. But, I'm confused about the specs.
On the box, it shows 130W for 3.3v, 5.0v.
Is this going to work in my XPS 9100? I recall seeing someone say that you need 150W for 3.3v, 5.0v?
The dimensions of the CX 750M are the same as the RX 750M = 150 mm x 86 mm x 160 mm.
This is roughly the same size as my existing PSU.
Based on the above, I think I need the RX 750M since it has 150W on the 3.3v/5.0v rail.
Can someone help me out on this?

Its not going physically fit into the case because its too long. 150mm x 86mm x 180mm

That machine dates back to when ATX12V 2.01 was the system spec for the PSU.
There was a user that had a problem recently with a Studio 540 from that same era that had problems with the new Corsair CX450M PSU because it was not backwards compatible with ATX12V 2.01.
The older models have 24 pin ATX connectors and SATA connectors like the new CX model but the newer models did not work in the Studio 540.
Keep this in mind if it doesn't work and buy one locally or are willing to return one to an online retailer that doesn't hassle you..

OK - I finally figured out why there is conflicting info on this product. Corsair has two versions of the RM750x.
The one that I was looking at is model CP-9029179-NA. Sometimes it's specified as RM750x (2018)

It's spec's show:
6th generation Intel Core processor Ready (Intel Skylake and Z170 motherboards)
ATX12V v2.4 and EPS 2.92 standards and is backward compatible with ATX12V 2.2, 2.31 and ATX12V 2.01 systems
It sounds like this should work.

That is one of the few that actually list that backwards compatibility. Hope that's true. Great PSU and is really quiet compared to the CX you were looking at.
If you have a Best Buy nearby, I did pick up the 850W 2018 version of that just a few weeks ago and they matched Amazon's price for it. They have both the 750W and 850W in stock at the closest BB to me. They will match Newegg as well.
You have an upside to this as it's a really nice PSU that you can take with you to your next machine as well.

Thanks - I had already picked up the RM750x at a local computer store on Friday. It was on sale at the same price as Amazon Canada, plus there is a $20 mail in rebate.

I installed the Rm750x a few days ago, and it seems to be running fine. It appears to be much quieter than the original PSU.
The installation was pretty straight-forward and it fit in the case without a problem. It's height is actually a 1/2" or so less than the original PSU, so there is a slight gap at the back of the case that I need to eventually fill in with a piece of metal.
