XPS 8300, power output from the 3.5mm mic jack using the tru sound integrated?

I see a lot of USB microphones, but less of the 3.5mm ones in the budget range (<$25). Wondering which would be the better choice for a more powerful mic? My child needs to be clearly heard while the mic sits on the desktop and his current one isn't very good.

The 8300 is a 10 year old model so might not support recent devices. Specs here to check--

Most people prefer a headset because the mic is closer to the person's mouth. They also pickup less ambient noise (and things like keyboard noise).

Anything USB-based has it's own "sound card" and drivers built-into it.
