XPS 8500, Radeon RX 580 or 590 upgrade
I'm looking to upgrade the video on my 8500. It still has the stock PSU in it, so I know that will need to be upgraded. I'm looking at the Radeon RX 580 or 590 since I have Freesync monitors and a new 34" ultra-wide 1080p. Does anyone know if these cards will fit/work in the 8500? Besides space and power requirements, I am also concerned about air flow. I've read a few issues from others that tried to put higher end cards in and had heat issues.
It currently has a 7870 in it and has been fine, but it doesn't seem to work well with my new ultra-wide. The i7-3770 doesn't seem taxed playing games, so that's why I'm considering the upgrade vs getting a new system.

JOCean sent you in the right direction with that link.
Few things to look for when you go to the Radeon card.
1) Max height under the side chassis is a card that has the connectors located around 4.3" high, otherwise the power connectors wont fit. Length wise you should be fine as long as you are able to connect the power cables under the side chassis. I had a MSI Sea Hawk GTX 1080 (Last post in that XPS 8500 thread) that was 10.5" long and 4.3" high. No problem with the fit. A 5" high card with the connectors on the side wont fit. Check the specs on your card carefully before you buy.
2) Try to stay with a rear blower card as it does exhaust heat out of the back of the case. You can certainly add a front intake fan, either standalone fan or as part of AIO CPU liquid cooler in the front intake position if heat becomes an issue.
The MSI Radeon RX Vega 56 8G is 5" high so won't fit.
The MSI Radeon RX 580 8G is 4.3" high so will fit fine.
There were users that put the older RX 480 cards into the XPS 8500 and they worked fine. Reference type cards with AMD spec PCB and fans seemed to work fine with the XPS 8500 BIOS. GPU's that didn't work on the Nvidia side typically used non-Nvida PCB's and tricked out fan configurations the manufacturer built around the Nvidia GPU. Reference type cards using standard PCB and fan designs were the safest bet.
3) 1080p should be fine with the i7 3770. It just depends on the refresh rate and the frame rate you are using to match the refresh rates. 60 fps should be fine, but I am assuming you have a higher refresh rate display and higher frame rates might push the CPU causing it to run hotter. I had the problem if you read that thread with 3440 x 1440 at 60 fps as the CPU temps became an issue and I had to liquid cool the CPU.
4) I like the Seasonic Focus+ Goid PSU. Compact, modular, great warranty. Good bang for the buck

Thanks for the info! I'm having a hard time finding a card that is 4.3" high. It seems most are 4.8-9" now. Also, my new monitor runs at 144Hz which I think is common for ultra-wides. I'm still using my 22" until I can get the 34" working with the right video card.

1080p at 144Hz is really demanding. Likely need to step up to the Vega 56 or 64.
