XPS 8500, video card upgrade questions

I am very confused with the numerous factors taken into account when choosing video cards, like the size, the 6 or 8 pin connectors, the BIOS, the power requirements, etc. All I know is I have a Dell XPS 8500 desktop, it has a Nvidia GeForce GT 620 video card installed, and I want a new one under $200 for gaming that recommends a Nvidia GeForce GTX 550 Ti level video card (any brand but with similar qualities).

Are there any other recommendations for video cards that best suit my computer, or is the Nvidia GeForce GTX 550 Ti fine?  How are the more recent options like the PNY Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050? Is a video card that is labeled 2048MB performing way worse than the same type of graphics card labeled with 2GB?  What does that mean, why is there storage on graphics cards?  I apologize for my abundance of basic questions, I have nonexistent experienced in computer hardware.

I'm not sure how to find out the power capacity of my specific desktop computer, and whether my BIOS or the 6-8 connector pins are compatible because I have never opened any computer before to see. Also I've heard things about Legacy vs UEFI and how video cards can be incompatible with older computers because they run with UEFI, I have no idea what this is about and I've also heard people use it with Legacy no problem??

It would be great if you could recommend a card that is the cheapest and compatible and a card that is closer to $200 and better and compatible, and the minimum performance level is/at the GTX 550 Ti.

If I need to provide more information on details about my computer, please let me know on how to find such information.

Thanks in advance!

The pascal based 1050 series is fine and faster than GTX 550.

The 1050 TI  4 GIG card is faster and is on par with 4 gig GTX 680 from 2012

If you only need as good as your 550 get a GTX 1030 card that uses GDDR5 (GIGABYTE GeForce GT 1030 GV-N1030D5-2GL )

GTX 1080 TI  works in XPS 400 with Power Supply Upgrade.

The issue with R series Radeon cards is that the UEFI BIOS cards do not support DOS VESA VIDEO mode 103 and therefore DO NOT WORK AT ALL in many Dells where the bios requires it.

Newer cards regardless of vendor require SECURE BOOT OFF and CSM ON with LEGACY OPTION ROMS enabled or they do not BOOT.

Short answer: any GeForce GTX 1050 should work in your PC and meet your requirements.

Longer answer: it seems there's a bit of confusion over which newer cards work with the older XPSs, the only way to be 100% sure is to find evidence of someone having used a particular card in a particular model. But I'm seeing more and more evidence that the GeForce GTX 10 series work in all the XPSs going back to at least the XPS 8000 (I have a GeForce GTX 1060 in my XPS 8000).

Greetings, Thanks for your informative advice. Any chance to install Nvidia GTX 1060 to XPS 8500 without any extra adjustment please. Regards, Han

Dell XPS 8500 for my 11-year old to use as an entry level game machine. I found this thread after I ran into problems upgrading the machine to Win 10 when I was told the current video card would not support Win10.

Although I've built a few machines in my day a long time ago, I'm new to all the different GPUs and what machines/CPU will support them. I've looked on our local craigslist and found a GeForce 560 ti 1GB GPU for $50. Would this card work in the above machine and give decent performance? For $50 I'm willing to throw the card in the machine and give it a try. Are there issues I should be aware of or settings I will need to modify?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

1. Most likely.

2. It is only worth $50 is functioning 100%. I don't buy used video cards any more. You can get a brand new Zotac Nvidia GTX-1030 for cheap (with a warranty).

3. Usually new (compatible, desktop version) drivers from nvidia.com ,

Good move by following Tesla's advice.

The GTX 560 1GB GPU was one of the video cards that did not work in the XPS 8500 due to video bios errors.  The -ti version would have been risky to buy for that reason.

The 460 watt PSU in the XPS 8500 can handle up to a GTX 1060 / RTX 2060.

thanks much for the input. BTW-I looked on Amazon and found a different card for an even better price.

"Gigabyte GeForce GT 1030 GV-N1030D5-2GL Low Profile 2GB"

Any reason why this could wouldn't work?

Again, thanks for the help.

Hello, I would like to jump in on the OP, I have XPS 8500, and want to use a dell U4919DW monitor 5120x1440.

I saw a recommendation that the GeForce GTX 1050 would support that monitor, can anyone confirm, Thanks!

(would i need 2gb or 4gb?, i don't use for gaming just office work)

thanks very much for the fast response.

GT 1030 shows:

Max Resolution Details
DVI 1920 x 1200 at 60 Hz / HDMI 4096 x 2160 at 60 Hz

GT1050TI shows
Multiple display connections

1 x DisplayPort 1.4 (4k resolution).

1 x HDMI 2.0b (1080p HD Video).

1 x DL-DVI-D (2560 x 1600 Resolution)

just so that I understand, is the $400 quadro P2000 the least expensive card that i can get for my 8500. If so would i be better off getting a new desktop?

this is not for gaming

thanks!

Is the XPS 8500 compatible with a GTX 1660 TI. I know it would need a pin cable connector... but aside from that?

Thanx in advance
