XPS 8700, confusing WiFi driver update

Jump to solution

Dell's Support Assist and Dell's support web site when I have it analyze my system for updates, show an updated driver for my Intel wifi card on my XPS 8700 running Windows 10 Pro. The driver update is for the Intel 7260, but my sytem has the Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6235 Wifi card. When Support Assist analyzes my system it lists the 7260 driver as an update and Dell's support web site also when I run the driver detection tool. Is this driver correct for my hardware?

If you go to Dell's Support page and enter your Service Tag, and then click System Configuration, you will find a tab for Original Configuration and see which WiFi card is listed.

Or, you can always go to Intel's site and download their update app which will scan your hardware and offer you the latest drivers for your Intel hardware, if any are needed.

For an older machine like this, on Windows-10 64bit ... as long as Windows PnP detects the card, and tosses you a working driver ... I would just use that.

And I suggest you ignore SupportASS-ist . It doesn't know what it's talking about half-the-time anyway.

That update applies to a Centrino wireless N-7260 and to practically every recent Dell.

Are you certain of the Centrino model you have?  The published Dell spec's don't detail what is in this model or could be in this model.

I'm pretty certain. Here is a picture of the original configuration pertaining to the adapter.snip.JPG

The driver you were offered works with several different Intel WiFi cards: 3160, 7260, 3165, and 7265.

Maybe they just neglected to include 6235 in the list of compatible WiFi cards...?

Pinged my Dell tech contact...

My Dell tech contact wants to know what happens if you attempt to install the driver for Intel 7260 WiFi that's being offered. If you get an error message, take a screenshot and post it here, or at least copy and post the message.

To be safe, manually set a System Restore point before attempting to install the 7260 driver on your PC.

Capture.JPGThis is the message I get. I've been ignoring the update for over a year. It finally annoyed me, so this is why I am asking about it here. I will use other sources for my driver updates as some have suggested. Thank you all for the help.

Uninstalling SupportASS-ist should cure that:
