XPS 8700, graphics card upgrade, worthwhile?

Hi!

I've found others with the same question but they were older posts. I'd LOVE to get a better card. I tried one over a year ago which did not work. I know this is an older machine, but is there any  card I can upgrade too that will improve my graphics enough to make it worthwhile?   

Here is my info below and what I tried:

MY MACHINE
Dell XPS 8700 X8700-3312BLK Desktop
Windows 7 Professional
Memory 32GB (Upgraded from 1)  Dual Channel DDR3 1600MHz - 4 DIMMs
Video Graphics NVIDIA GeForce GTX 745 4GB DDR3

ATTEMPTED UPGRADE TO:  MSI GAMING RX 480 GDD R5 8GB    DID NOT WORK. CRASHED MY MACHINE. 

Any input would be greatly appreciated!
