XPS 8700, upgrade PSU and RAM, #7
Hi, hoping someone can help me get rid of the headache I've been having for the past few days haha. I have a XPS8700 desktop (i7-4770, 8gig ram and I've added a 6GB GTX1060). Lately I've been having issues where every so often (enough times to be a pain) my 1TB HDD won't be recognized on boot. I've switched over my Win10 install to my 256GB SSD and i can now boot into windows every time however my drives on my 1TB won't always show up, sometimes will kick in after a while. All this (plus my USB ports sometimes not functioning correctly) leads me to believe my PSU isn't cutting in (I'm new to custom PCs hence me buying a Dell initially, so i never thought to check if my PSU would be ok.).
So with all that said i am now trying to figure out what PSU i should get, i don't want to spend too much on a 80plus titanium PSU but i do want something that will push out enough power and more importantly fit in my XPS case (ideally a gold PSU to help minimize a bit of the heat inside the case? as well as modular to clear out the clutter in the mid size case). I also want to add some RAM as the 8GB is clearly not enough for my fiancé's use (Lightroom). Curious, what you have already done and why you think it's a PSU issue? I mean, this could for example be a mobo issue, a reseating issue, a cable issue, a failing HDD, etc. My first thought would be to try disconnecting and reconnecting the hard drive's data and power cables. (Also, if you have spares available for either, now is the time to try swapping them). Next, try connecting the hard drive to a different SATA header on the mobo. Also, checking the hard drive to see if it's failing or has errors (or alternatively, plugging it in to a different PC to see if the issue follows the HDD).

The problems you describe does not seem to me to be associated with a failing PSU. The hard drive problem could be because it is starting to fail. The USB problem could be because the PC does not recognize what is being plugged into the USB port.

You are looking at getting ram that will NEVER work.

Thanks for the reply. I've dug a bit deeper on amazon and found Samsung memory which is what is already in the case so I assume these should be ok right?
