Is it possible to upgrade the media card reader? Or are we stuck with the stock option?

Not sure what you mean by upgrade.
The reader is not standard.
nor is the faceplate standard.

Upgrade to one that can handle UHSII cards at their full potential. I guess the answer is no based on what you're saying.
