XPS 8920, RTX 2060, new power source?
Hi everyone - used to change out video cards all the time but that was 25 years ago, and its gotten alot more complicated so forgive my ignorance! I have an XPS 8920 i7 7700 3.6 GHz with an NVidia 1060. Was looking to upgrade and a 2060 was suggested. I have the original Dell power source- think its 460W? Is that enough power? The rest of my specs are 16 gb RAM, 512 SSD, 1 T HD. FYI I play mostly RPG/third person adventure- no fast FPS or online gaming. I'd rather upgrade to a less powerful card than fool around with a new power source : )

Lots of threads about upgrading the GPU in the XPS 8920, like this one. Search for others...
You need to know:
GPU requirements of the RTX 2060 card
PSU size (watts) in PC now
Card dimensions: is it going to fit inside the case?

My 01/2020 XPS 8930 i9-9900, 16GB, 512GB SSD, 1TB HDD, ODD, 460W PSU shipped with an RTX2060. I suspect the PSU is just within spec... next GPU power rating up would need a bigger PSU.
So, you could go for it and probably be ok, and you'll know to get a bit more PSU, if you ever replace the one you've got.

You probably won't damage your system, but you could see some wonky performance. nVidia recommends a minimum 500 watt PSU for the RTX 2060.
Swapping out the PSU is almost as simple as swapping out the graphics card.

thanks Dell630i. I'm comfortable changing out the video card and installing RAM but nervous about the PSU! Keep imagining the whole thing will blow up on me

With footnote: 4 - Recommendation is made based on PC configured with an Intel Core i7 3.2 GHz processor. Pre-built system may require less power depending on system configuration.
The 'more or less' is what I was alluding to. 500W will cover it... but you can get by with 460W if your system isn't maxed out.
I'd go for it.

I agree with what you mentioned upthread . . . 460 watts would probably be just barely enough.

Also reiterating what @RoHe mentioned . . . make sure the graphics card you choose is no longer than 10.7 inches (270mm) or it will not fit.

I had much concern myself. I took a lot of photos so I could get the right cable routing and plug in the correct power connectors. Turns out . . . it is almost idiot proof. And that is a good thing for me

thank you everyone! I think I'm going to go for it with the current power source. Also going to check on the length specs of the 2060- hadn't thought of that so thank you . Waiting on a new monitor coming next week and then the new video card. The quarantine really got me back into gaming - feeling like I'm 20 again

I shopped ~27" monitors for my new system but then decided to wait and see since my ancient EIZOs will not die and still look good. So, what monitor did you settle on... I'm still shopping?

So I'm changing out a 17 in 16 year old (!) View Sonic for this https://www.viewsonic.com/us/products/shop/monitors/elite-gaming-monitors/high-refresh/xg2760.html ; Decided not to do full 4k UHD because was worried my CPU
/GPU wouldn't be able to handle it and would have really low F
