XPS 8930, BIOS screen won't show on Acer monitor

Jump to solution

The XPS 8930 boots directly to Windows 10 bypassing the Dell splash screen and BIOS access.

Using Dell XPS 8930 port 12 with HDMI cable to Acer flat screen monitor. Diagram shows port 13 as Display Port, but HDMI only fits port 12. Port 13 seems to have different fitting.

BTW, did you look at changing Boot Option #1 in BIOS setup with the bootable USB stick connected before you power the PC on?

Below is the XPS 8930 back panel.

3 = DP (DisplayPort)
4 = HDMI
6 = USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type-C port

But, you would ONLY use those onboard video out ports if you do NOT have an added discrete video card installed like #2 below =

If you have an added discrete video card, the monitor should be connected directly to it.

Pressing

F2 then F12

F2 then F12

F2 then F12

F2 then F12

F2 then F12

F2 then F12

F2 then F12

F2 then F12

F2 then F12

Should get into F2 Bios Setup.

Secure Boot must be off and FAST BOOT must be off and POST must be Long.

Pressing F2 too many times too fast will either lockup or ignore the keyboard.

Thank you.  That gave me access to BIOS, but I am trying to set boot options so that I can boot first to DVD or Bootable thumb drive.  Those options do not appear in the boot tab.  Only options are for Windows Boot Loader or IPV 4 or 6.  How can I accomplish this?

Connect the USB stick or put the DVD in the drive. Then reboot and immediately press F12. Look for boot options on that menu and select the one you want.

NOTE: This is only for this current boot. You'll have to use the F12 menu every time you want to boot from either the USB or DVD.

Right on Ron.

Is there a way to use  UEFI boot and make the change permanent?

Did you look at Boot Options>File Browser Add Boot Options in BIOS setup? That allows you to set the boot path in the boot option list.

You may need to have a bootable USB connected before you power on to see if you can add it to the list.

If that doesn't do what you want, you probably will have to use the F12 menu every time, unless somebody else has a better idea.

Why do you want to boot from an external device all the time, anyway?

Thanks for you help Ron.

Rather than  mess things up royally I will stay with your F12 solution.
