XPS 8930, BIOS update, BSOD

Hi all,

My XPS 8930 i7-8700 was all happy until after SupportAssist had me download and update to the latest “urgent” Dell BIOS. Now I get the BSOD memory issue that the latest BIOS was supposed to fix. I tried downgrading but it won’t let me.  Any thoughts or advice?

TIA

Is PC under warranty?

Are you saying it actually still boots but Win 10 gives that BSOD?

Attempting to downgrade BIOS is risky and can brick your motherboard.

You can try clearing BIOS:

  1. Power on and immediately press F2 to open BIOS setup
  2. Copy all current BIOS settings
  3. Power off and unplug
  4. Press/hold power button for ~15 sec
  5. Open case and remove motherboard battery (check Service Manual for details)
  6. Press/hold power button for ~30 sec
  7. Reinstall battery
  8. Close up and see if it works properly now

It does still boot into windows but an indeterminate number of minutes (2-8) afterwards I get the blue screen with a memory management stop error. This is apparently known by Dell: https://www.dell.com/support/article/us/en/04/sln309844/some-computers-may-hang-or-present-a-blue-screen-of-death-with-stop-code-memory-management-error?lang=en

I'm just spitballing here, but can you F8 on boot-up and choose "safe mode" and from there do a system restore to a prior saved restore point?

What version of BIOS did you install?

The latest BIOS for the XPS 8930 is 1.1.6, but it says nothing about fixing any memory management issues. It only mentions adding support for 9th Generation CPUs.  I looked as far back as BIOS v1.0.11 (21-June'18), but none of them mention fixing memory management issues.

Do you have DDR4 2666Mhz RAM in your PC?

I'd still try clearing BIOS as I posted above...

I have an XPS 8930 too.  Dell pushes me to install the latest "urgent" BIOS update.  I'm a little worried.  Did you found the problem and repair it?

Thanks

I installed the bios update 1.1.6 that RoHe posted upthread with no problems. I did it with a thumb drive, F12 on boot, and flashing the bios

Hi... I thought I should post to this thread as well. I just received a new 8930 with 1.1.6 Bios and at the moment I'm down and waiting for a Dell tech support to come to the  house and replace a memory DIM. It's just a few days old.!

My issue is also trying to get this bios to allow me to boot from a CD/DVD drive and/or a USB thumb drive. I'm very experienced but still I can't get this simple task to work. My Dell tech support person says "It's not possible to change the boot sequence in this BIOS."!!!  "Why would you want to do that?" he says. Good grief. I am so annoyed by this kind of incompetence.

My question is, has anyone had any success setting up an appropriate boot sequence like CD/DVD 1st then USB 2nd then, finally, the SSD.  If so can you please publish the steps here and/or provide a link showing the steps?

I tried this link but the BIOS does not see my DVD drive. Is this yet another issue I have to get resolved?

What am I missing if this is possible to do?

Regards

Trip

The Dell tech support person is correct, you cannot change the boot sequence in the BIOS and have it boot the CD/DVD automatically. With the UEFI BIOS you need to boot using F!2 and then select the CD/DVD from the Boot Menu. Before booting with F12 you must first put the CD/DVD in the drive.

Thanks Vic384.... I'll give that a try once my system is up and running again. Dell decided to replace my current 8930 system with a new one.

I have a Dell 8930 and I just started getting that same BSOD.  I researched the Bios History, and found that Bios version 1.0.10,1.0.10 23 May 20182:57:32 AM states the following:  Enhancements:
- Improved the memory compatibility for 2666Mhz memory modules.

I'm currently on 1.1.6.  Do I have to down grade my BIOS to the 1.0.10 in order to get the fix for the 2666Mhz RAM?  Or should the 1.1.6 already have it included as a part of the version build?

Is it safe to go back to the old 1.0.10 BIOS and then sequentially upgrade the BIOS?  BTW - I'm running an i3-8100 3.6GHz.

Thanks,  Gene ...

BIOS updates are supposed to be cumulative, so you do not have to go back to 1.0.10 to get that RAM improvement. And it's risky even to try to revert...

Do you have  2666MHz RAM in your system? And exactly what BSOD are you getting?
