XPS 8930, E170S, cannot get 1280x1024 60Hz

Jump to solution

I recently got an XPS 8930 and am having severe problems connecting my old 2009 E170S monitor to it. First, there's no VGA out port on the XPS 8930. So I tried a XPS 8930 USB-C to E170S VGA which doesn't detect my E170S. I then tried a XPS 8930 HDMI to VGA adapter to E170S VGA in port, and am now getting a message saying my current display settings aren't supported (1360x768 60Hz) and I need to set it to 1280x1024 60Hz (or other supported setting). But setting my display to 1280x1024 60Hz (or less) doesn't work. I still get the same error message. I tried installing the latest drivers (granted many years old), but still nothing. I went into Intel's settings and changed it to 1280x1024 and the refresh rate to 60, but still nothing. What else am I missing? Do I need to restart my machine with the enxt settings?  Is there something else I'm missing?

What's the "native" (= "Optimal" or "Recommended") resolution for your monitor?

Do you have an add-in video card (AMD or NVidia) or do you only have onboard Intel HD Graphics?

And if you have an add-in video card, are you connecting the monitor to the HDMI port on the add-in video card, not to the onboard Intel Graphics HDMI port?

Yes, that was the problem. Needed to connect my monitor to the graphics card itself.
