XPS 8930, display is messed up

I was playing f Hoyle card games. I have the CD from which I install the games. I clicked to run it full screen. When I did that a little box popped up warning me that the best resolution is such and such. Then my full screen card game went back to normal window size and a little thing popped up that said it was adjusting my monitor and the next thing I knew my task bar was gone.

I can push that little button on my monitor for auto adjustment and the screen flickers a little as it appears to be making an adjustment, and my taskbar becomes visible, but then as soon as that adjustment has finished my taskbar disappears again. I have checked my display settings and its at the recommended setting. Everything is working, except I can't access my taskbar, which means I can't access my start button.

Sure hope someone can help.

What machine make and model?

What version of Windows?

Try Alt-Tab or Alt-Enter.

You can also press Ctrl-Alt-Delete. Bring up Task-Manager. Kill the card-game task if you have to.

Windows 10 Home

Here's what I was told on a Windows forum:

"Your Intel® HD Graphics P630 is providing an active signal resolution of 1920x1080 which is beyond the maximum resolution of 1680x1050 that your monitor can handle. "

So I'm trusting this is correct and I ordered a new monitor today. But it sure seems awfully funny to me that when all this was discussed with a Dell rep prior to purchase I was not told this.

But I'm still wondering about System Restore. I had 5 restore points. Last night I tried a SR with the most recent from that morning and after close to 3 hours it showed as failed. So I tried again in Safe Mode and this time I chose the 2nd oldest point. It didn't take long at all to run but once again it failed.

Today I went into Safe Mode to try SR again and found that all my restore points had been wiped away. So what's up with this computer that it's doing this?

Not sure what monitor you have, but your XPS-8920 video card can output both 1920x1080, 1680x1050, as well as lots of other 16:9 and 16:10 aspect-ratio resolutions.

Did you reboot and it's still broken (still can't see Start Button or clock)?

Did you try hovering down there? Maybe it's just hiding. It can also be moved to a different edge of screen.

The monitor is Dell E207WFP.

Yes, I have rebooted, I have hoovered, I have grabbed the taskbar and moved it around. I think the display problem is all about the old Dell monitor I'm using.

But what about the System Restore situation?

Did you mean E2007WFP? The E2007WFP has optimal/max resolution of 1600 x 1200 at 60 Hz.

I removed your private service tag number from view. You have the XPS 8930.

The XPS 8930 has the following onboard video out ports =
DP (DisplayPort)
HDMI

The E207WFP has the following video in ports =
DVI
VGA

This is how you could be connecting the E207WFP monitor (how did you have it connected?) =

XPS 8930 HDMI out port --> HDMI to DVI cable --> E207WFP DVI in port

-or-

XPS 8930 HDMI out port --> HDMI to VGA Converter --> VGA to VGA cable --> E207WFP VGA in port

An aside for @DELL-Chris M  -  Why doesn't the Support site find "Dell E207WFP" or "E207WFP" (without the quotes)?

I think because it is so old (12 years)? I had to do a google search.

If you want more info about System Restore, you can read this:
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/12415/windows-10-recovery-options

... or just Google it.

But more to the point:
- System Restore hardly ever works when you need it to
- System Restore is not a good way to protect your computer's operation and data
- System Restore is not really appropriate for this kind of fix.

Have you scanned thoroughly for malware recently? Some malware can block you from doing a System Restore and/or delete all your restore points...
