XPS 8930, i7-8700, 3rd party CPU cooler

After some research I was able to switch the Intel stock CPU cooler on my Dell 8930 with i7 8700 (non-k) processor.

To cooler I choose was the ARCTIC Freezer 11 LP (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0037AKXKM/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1). I didn't want to remove the mother board to switch the backplate, so I went with this cooler, which enable me to just plug four M3 default screws directly on the board. I bought them at brazilian ebay-similar (https://produto.mercadolivre.com.br/MLB-982228557-kit-parafusos-philips-m3-x300-unidades-pronta-entrega-_JM).

If fitted perfectly the available space, don't touching the RAM sticks, as you can see in the pictures.

Overall, I am very satisfied with the cooler. It came with pre applied thermal paste, runs quiet and the cpu temps rarely go over 50C.

Sorry for the pics, when I am logged in I can see them.

But anyway I created an album here: https://imgur.com/a/6dqeJ56

I used 8 mm M3 screws, but I think it's not necessary to be this exact length, any 7-10mm will do the job.

Appears to be a nice solution, but pictures do not work on this forum. What length M3 screws are required?

Nice job!   So what kind of temps are u getting at full load on the CPU?  Wondering how well a 92mm fan does cooling the ~100 degree C temps at load.

It's hard to say because of the crappy Dell motherboard does not supply enough power, the CPU keeps been power throttling.

Overall normal usage the temps rarely go beyond 50C. Under full load (prime95 small FFT), all cores go to 4.3GHz, it keeps about 85C before exceeding the cpu power limit, and then the clock goes to only 3.2GHz, and the temps lower to about 70C.

Is it any more silent?

I didn't notice any differece, for me the original cooler was silent also. But the temps improved.

It looks nice but what makes it better than the OEM one, and what is in those pipes? I would consider buying one but it looks like you need a higher watt PSU in order for it to work right.

Those are heat pipes, made of copper, to dissipate heat better.

It does not need another power supply.

It runs quieter and keeps CPU temps lower.

I know what copper is, I wanted to know what is inside them, if anything.

I thought you said the mobo and psu won't supply enough watts for them.

I saw a YouTube video on it and it does cool more and is quieter but it is only 2000 rpm and the stock intel one spins much faster.

There is nothing inside the copper pipe of the CPU heat sink. The copper pipe just acts as a conductor of heat from the heat sink to the cooling fins.

I ordered this cooler to fit to my 8930. Did you mean M3 x 80mm or M3 x 8mm?

Is it the screws to fit the black plastic guides or the screws from the fan to them? If it's the latter, then it must surely be 80mm?

EDIT: It's okay, I get what they are for now. Fixing the black plastic guides to the motherboard.

Yep, you got it!

Super easy. Good luck!

Have you seen the unit Dell makes for the 8930 that drops the temps 18* F ?

Good day

First off all, thank you for your detailed post and solution aleg123.

I too have now implemented your solution. Too the others that are also looking to use this solution.

I am running BIOS version 1.0.11. With the stock cooler I got an average of 75 degrees Celsius in prime 95  (small FFTs) at a package power of 65 W constant, all cores throttled at 3.2 GHz after a while.

With the Arctic cooler Freezer 11 LP I am getting the same temps in prime 95 with the same settings.

I have not tested gaming yet, but think the temps might be lower than before in games as it is not as intensive as prime 95.

The cooler does sound more quiet too me than that of the stock cooler on full load. And personally it just sounds better to me even when it is spinning at full load, i.e. the fan bearing/mechanical sound is not as harsh as it was with the stock cooler.

My system is also the DELL XPS 8930 i7 8700 (non-k) version.
