XPS 8930, memory upgrade from 16GB to 64GB

Hi - I would like to know what current memory is installed on my XPS 8930, I see its 16GB, but not sure it's in one single slot, (Dell says its max 4 x 16GB) if so what should I buy, there are so many possibilities;
DDR4 PC4-21300 • 16-18-18 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR4-2666 • 1.2V • Ballistix Sport • BLS16G4D26BFSC
DDR4 PC4-21300 • 16-18-18 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR4-2666 • 1.2V • Ballistix Sport • BLS16G4D26BFSB
DDR4 PC4-21300 • 16-18-18 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR4-2666 • 1.2V • Ballistix Sport • BLS16G4D26BFSE
DDR4 PC4-21300 • CL=19 • Single Ranked • x8 based • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR4-2666 • 1.2V • 1024Meg x 64 • Crucial • CT2K8G4DFS8266

(found on http://eu.crucial.com/eur/en/compatible-upgrade-for/Dell/xps-8930)

Would they all be compatible to whatever is on my system? Description says Installed Memory 16.0GB (15.8 GB Usable) but nothing to confirm its already just in one slot or 2 x 8GB (to determine how many new 16 GB sticks need to be purchased). Is there a Dell site which can provide this directly?

Many thanks in advance.

Mark

Re: XPS 8930 additional memory upgrade (from 16GB to 64GB)

MarkvsK,

Depending on the processor that is installed in your computer will determine the speed.

Memory

Table 1. Memory specifications
Slots Four UDIMM slots
Type DDR4
Speed
  • Up to 2400 MHz: i3 processor
  • Up to 2666 MHz: i5/i7/i7k processors
Configurations supported:
  Per memory module slot 4 GB, 8 GB, and 16 GB
  Total memory 8 GB, 16 GB, 24 GB, 32 GB, and 64 GB

The following table lists the available memory configuration matrix:

Table 2. Memory configuration matrix
Configuration Slot
DIMM1 DIMM2 DIMM3 DIMM4
8 GB 4 GB   4 GB
16 GB 8 GB   8 GB
24 GB 4 GB 4 GB 8 GB 8 GB
32 GB 8 GB 8 GB 8 GB 8 GB
64 GB 16 GB 16 GB 16 GB 16 GB

Memory

The XPS 8930 has four DIMM slots. Your computer supports 8 GB, 16 GB, 24 GB, 32 GB, and 64 GB UDIMM DDR4 memory (up to 2400 MHz for i3 processor and up to 2666 MHz for i5/i7/i7k processors).

NOTE: Use slots DIMM1 and DMM3 if you need to use two memory modules

Re: XPS 8930 additional memory upgrade (from 16GB to 64GB)

Hi Jesse,

Thanks for your prompt reply.

I have an i7-8700 3.2GHz.

Question though is there any way to check what's on there already. Do I have to open the box to check or is there a way I can check on the system description?

I believe its 1x16gb but not entirely sure. Do the RAM sticks need to be the same or can I buy any on the list I mentioned above?

Thanks again for your help.

Best regards,

Mark

Re: XPS 8930 additional memory upgrade (from 16GB to 64GB)

MarkvsK,

The memory has to be the same. You cannot mix different speeds of ram. You can open the system to look. You can look in the system Bios by starting the computer and tapping the F2 key. You can also click the link below to add your service tag, let the site detect your pc and click the configuration tab to see.

Re: XPS 8930 additional memory upgrade (from 16GB to 64GB)

MarkvsK,

You can download and install a program like CPU-Z from https://www.cpuid.com/ to determine exactly what is install in each memory slot. Go to the program's SPD tab and select the slot # and the memory size, max. bandwidth, manufacturer, part number, and serial number will be displayed. This information will help you determine what to purchase, but you need this information first.

Re: XPS 8930 additional memory upgrade (from 16GB to 64GB)

Hi Jesse,

Thanks for getting back to me and for the link,

From the tag I found;

Available Memory               52.19 %

Page File Size                    24,194.8MB

Available Page File            99.67 %

Virtual Memory                  24,194.8MB

Available Virtual Memory  58.27 %

ChannelA-DIMM1              8,192.0MB

ChannelB-DIMM1              8,192.0MB

Does that mean I have 2x 8Gb?

Unfortunately, it doesn't really say which stick(s) is(are) in there

Best regards,

Mark

So I ran it and found;

ON THE MEMORY TAB:

Size: 16GBytes

NB Frequency: 798.0 to 3000  MHz (moves around live)

ON THE SPD TAB:

Just Slot#1 with everything greyed out

BUT ON THE AMAZING TXT REPORT I FOUND;

OMG, gonna have to buy 4 x 16gb its such a crazy cost!

Any thanks for your precious help, really, to the both of you!

Re: XPS 8930 additional memory upgrade (from 16GB to 64GB)

MarkvsK,

In CPU-Z, slot #1 is grayed out because there is no memory in that slot. If you had click on the drop-down arrow you could select another memory slot. You should see information in slots 2 and 4 and slot 3 should also be grayed out if your memory is install correctly according to Jesse's Table 2.

Re: XPS 8930 additional memory upgrade (from 16GB to 64GB)

Well spotted Vic,

Indeedo its slot #2 and slot #4, both indicate;

DDR4

8192 MB

max bandwidth DDR4-2666 (1333 MHz)

Manufacturer: Micron Technology

Part Number 8ATF1G64AZ-2G6H1

Ranks single and serial

So basically I have to buy another 4x 16gb to increase substantially my memory.

The problem I have is Excel sends "Not enough system resources to display completely" on some of my sheets and crashes. I was surprised that 16Gb RAM was not enough, given that the same sheet runs fine on my old Precision T5500 which only has 12Gb...

Not too sure what the issue might be, for all I know could be totally unrelated to RAM.

Thanks for your help!

Best,

Mark

Re: XPS 8930 additional memory upgrade (from 16GB to 64GB)

Mine came with the same configuration, but I only needed to upgrade it to 32gb.  I bought Crucial memory and it worked perfectly in the other two slots.  Since you don't know if you really need 64gb, what about buying 2x16gb and putting those in the open slots and seeing how Excel runs with 48gb of memory, and then buy the other two if you find you really need them.  In looking Microsoft's Knowledge Base, I found this article that may help:
