XPS 8930, slow CD/DVD read

My CD ROM reads quite slowly compared to my other desktop. It is not related to dirt on the discs. The same discs were use in the comparison.  Are there any settings I can play with or is there an upgrade I can purchase?

Thanks,

Ken K

I found that my security app was making my dvd/cd very slow. There is a setting in my security app to exclude dvd/cd drive. Now it runs just as fast as any other drive I have had.

Check on that.

You have to check the original system configuration of your XPS 8930 to determine the part number of the CD/DVD drive to determine its specs. My XPS 8910 came with an 8x Hitachi slimline drive. The slimline drives used in the XPS 8910, 8920, & 8930 are like drives in laptops and are slower than full size CD/DVD drives in older desktops which can be 16x, 24x, or higher.

Thanks.  I will check my security app.  The drive is a DVD+RW. DU-8A5LH, but I haven't yet found the specs on it.

Thanks again,

There are a few different manufacturers. If it's from Liteon:

It appears the DU-8A5LH is DVD+R 8x, DVD-R 6x, and CD-R 24x. A typical half-height CD/DVD drive is CD-ROM 48x DVD-ROM 18x. So what are you comparing to in your other computer?

The full height unit is an LG WH14NS40.  The read is 48X max and DVD-R 24X max.  Is there a half-height drive that approaches this or am I SOL?

The LG WH 14NS40 is considered half-height or 1 5/8 inches. The specs I found indicates CD-R read of 48x and DVD-R read of 16x. See here: https://www.lg.com/us/support/products/documents/LG_SPEC_WH14NS40_011617_PR.pdf The height of the drive in the XPS 8930 is about 3/4 inch (quarter-height if there is such a thing) You will probably not find a drive that size which approaches the speed of a half-height drive. The alternative is an external USB case for a half-height drive..

Thanks.  I will look for an external reader enclosure.  Your help has been MOST appreciated.
