XPS 8940, BIOS update failed

I am not more able to update or fixing over USB Stick BIOS_IMG.rcv. This issue comes after I make updates with MyDell Tool same time with Windows Update. How can I fix it?

Can you be more specific?

Which BIOS over what BIOS version?

Have you been able to do it before, if so, how?

The process should be to create the USB drive with the file on it (FAT32 format), insert the USB drive, Restart, use F12 to boot from the USB drive. Is this what you tried? Did you get an error?

Within Windows, if you get the BIOS version file (.EXE extension) and execute it, what happens?

Shall i delete the RUNONCE key from registry? Or shall i reinstall Windows? Will this fix the failed Bios Update?

I can boot in Windows as well in Linux over Grub. All other systems working good.

Usually I think both Windows Update and Dell Updater will write into the registry to run something on the next boot, and they probably used the same RUNONCE key.

If you started the Windows Update and let it tell you it needs to reboot, and THEN did the BIOS Update, it would have overlaid the Windows Update file...

So, can you now boot to Windows is the question?

If not, try the BIOS recovery using a USB drive with that file on it.

CAN NOT BOOT to the Desktop? I'm not sure how to recover without re-installing either a back up if you have one or doing an OS reinstall which could wipe out everything on the C: drive. If using the Dell image you'll get most of the Dell items back and have to configure and personalize your system all over again. Can't do that, a Clean install of the OS with MS's Media Creator tool.

If however, you CAN boot to the desktop, just go back to Dell Support and D/L the BIOS version to your PC and execute it, it will update the BIOS for you.

Do you know what update failed?

Open Windows Update & Security screen. Click Troubleshoot on left side. When that screen opens, click Additional Troubleshooters and on that last screen click Windows Update.

See if that helps.

I have already tried with USB recovery but i get also failed. Or what you mean? You mean BIOS_IMG.rcv from USB stick?

And what you meman with "BIOS version file (.EXE extension) " Where i can get this exe? I dont find that.

Your XPS-8940 is running BIOS-Firmware v2.6.0

I suggest you install v2.7.0 next. Make sure that works.

Then install v2.8.0. Eventually, you can do v2.9.0 to be current for now .

Don't be in a hurry, and try not to brick your motherboard sir.

The Windows Update patch name is KB5017308.

I will fix this problem first and will try again with Bios Update.
