XPS 8940, Better 3rd party cooler
Hello there
I would greatly appreciate any help to find a new/better 3rd party cooler for my XPS 8940. It came with the thin and small stock cooler and is overheating the whole time. I got a i9-10900 processor with 128 GB of RAM and I need this computer to generate some GIS layers. These jobs take 2-4 hrs every time and I can see that the processor is throttling or C° 97+ all the time.
I tried the Noctua 15S but the problem is there is no space for the bracket under the motherboard. The stock fan screws directly into the chassis from above.
Thank you very much

Easy and quick solution using zip ties.

@bertro514 that's great info
I noticed that black piece on top of the video card ... keep?
Pardon my messy desk, keeping 16 3D printers tuned and printing well keeps me busy
The bottom right black part?

As you can see, it is dimensionally complex. Hope this helps...(I measured as accurately as I could, but because it isn't flat it was more challenging).
P.S. I just noticed that I omitted the horizontal length of the tab on the left...it is 18mm.

@LikeHerdingCats yes, keep that. it sustains the GPU when your PC is upright. The fan does fit under that bracket. It's not in my picture because I wanted to show the fan itself. BTW, in terms of mounting the fan, you'll have to remove a couple of plastic cable holders from the front panel, and only two of the fan's holes actually have corresponding holes in the front panel. I used a rubber fan mount in one and a small tie-wrap for the other, and the fan seems to be holding well, without vibration. @SteveK318 was working on designing a 3d printed bracket that could hold that fan better.

@Richmond Dan That's great. Better than I can manage eyeballing the motherboard and using pieces of cardboard. Not even sure why the heatsink is needed over the seven higher components, as they are inductors.

@Richmond Dan that would work too, it wouldn't push it to the absolute max, as the CPU will be power-limited by the turbo time limits. But if that's how you plan to use your CPU anyway, then that's a realistic test. I'd say just go ahead and run the PC through the heaviest realistic scenario you expect to use it for: your favorite game, your productivity / rendering software. If you run it like that for a few hours and nothing crashes, you're good to go. No need to split hairs
I started out spending hours tweaking and running synthetic benchmark upon synthetic benchmark until one point where I told myself: I'll never actually use the computer this way in real-life, I was just running those for "pretty graphs" and numbers. So I stopped and just focused on using it for what I bought it: flight simulators. If it don't crash and the FPS are what I need, then it's good, no further tweaking and benchmarking necessary.

Wow, thanks for taking the time to post all that. I'm afraid that's way over my pay grade, though . I was thinking of something more along the lines of, "...run the PassMark 3D graphics test twice in quick succession..." or some such. But thanks anyway!

@Gambit_man - great write-up ! Hoping to get my 92mm Noctua on @purpledrillmonkey 's backet by this weekend !! I received the part the other day, and it looks great. I also bought an 80mm Noctua to put under the GPU upfront.

@LikeHerdingCats - that's not even close to a messy desk !! Are the 3D printers for personally use or just business ? I would think you might be able to pick up some business from the group !

@bertro514 - yeah, that design kinda came to a halt for now until I get some time (hopefully this weekend) to shutdown my computer for a while.. I'm going to install the upper bracket with the 120mm fan, and then try and get a better idea what I can do down below with it shut off and I can my hands in there and get some measurements and ideas.

@Gambit_man - oh yeah, you're right, and that's what I have to mount in it !! I probably wrote that because that's what I have there now.

@SteveK318 thanks glad it helped. However you mentioned using the mount for a 92mm fan. The fan mount designed by @purpledrillmonkey that I was referring to in my post is the one here: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4785786. It is designed specifically to mount a 120mm fan not a 92mm - that is why I used it to mount a NoctuaNF-A12x25 PWM which is 120mm.

@Jon-62
I posted the dimensional drawing (separately) before installing the heatsink. Now I have the test results, but they're somewhat difficult to interpret. The ambient temperature in the room with the PC was 5-10 degrees F higher when I tested with the heatsink, versus prior to installing it.
Running Cinebench R23 multi-core, the max CPU individual core temp went up from 73C to 82C, presumably due to the warmer ambient room temperature. The VR VCC temp went up from 69C to 71C after installing the heatsink. My guess is that the VRM temp would have been higher than 71C if it hadn't been for the new heatsink. So bottom line, it's unclear how much if any the new heat sink on the VRM helped, but it may have helped somewhat.
I'd be interested in hearing the experience of others who've installed a VRM heatsink.
P.S. It is also possible that the heatsink will be more effective at dissipating heat at higher temperatures...70C is not terribly hot.
