XPS 8940, Better 3rd party cooler

Hello there

I would greatly appreciate any help to find a new/better 3rd party cooler for my XPS 8940. It came with the thin and small stock cooler and is overheating the whole time. I got a i9-10900 processor with 128 GB of RAM and I need this computer to generate some GIS layers. These jobs take 2-4 hrs every time and I can see that the processor is throttling or C° 97+ all the time.

I tried the Noctua 15S but the problem is there is no space for the bracket under the motherboard. The stock fan screws directly into the chassis from above.

Thank you very much

@Kelvin Lee - lately mines been off about 50% of the time... I like to admire my handiwork !! And occasional planning things and trying things.

I did just close it up and got it down to idle as best as I could for almost an hour and a half ... Ambient temp 19°-20°c, and it averaged 29°c ... This is with the AWCC fan setting on 'Quiet' .  My current configuration has all Noctua fans - 90mm exhaust, NH-U9S with 2 fans, 120mm intake up front, and an 80mm intake up front below the GPU.

If I remember, I'll try to get some temps while under 'normal' usage at some point. I don't think it's gone over 70°c  under normal conditions. But I don't really check it much anymore since replacing Dell's inadequate CPU cooler & fan.

Nothing special, a simple Arctic P12 PWM PST CO 120mm. Quiet efficient & effective.

Which Arctic PWM fan?  It would look good with one or two Arctic BioniX P120 fans.  Then it would look like an Arctic Freezer 34 eSports or DUO, just sitting a little lower on the mobo.

@Kelvin Lee  I'm not (yet) seeing your pictures, but the two square cable retainers inside the case need to be removed to fit either fan frame.  The frame and fan(s) go inside the case, so the two WiFi antennae on the outside of the case should not need to be removed.

@Jon-62  alright sir thanks.

Do we need to remove the highlight red bracket things? because I find it blocks the installation of the fan. Fan frame mounting points.jpgIMG_20210604_214216.jpg

@Kelvin Lee  I've produced designs for both a double fan frame and a single fan frame, which I have uploaded to Thingiverse.

The double fan frame requires four screws, washers and Nyloc nuts and, at present, I've only produced this to suit #6-32 UNC x 1/2" screws which go through the four square holes highlighted in yellow.

The single fan frame requires only two screws, washers and Nyloc nuts and has been produced in variants requiring EITHER  #6-32 UNC x 1/2" screws OR M3 x 10 mm / M3 x 12 mm screws.  These go through the two lower square holes highlighted in yellow.

The fan / fans required are 80 mm.

@Jon-62 , I can see the photos now. @Kelvin Lee - yes, they need to be removed. They just snap out. Just move the wires aside, being careful of the connection in the motherboard.

@SteveK318

I had 8940 and currently installl with noctua u9s(cpu) , noctua nf-a9 pwm (rear using 4pin), noctua nf-a12x25 (upper front), dell stock exaust fan (lower front using 3pin). But during gaming time, my dell fan randomly spin faster and max noise and sometimes it gets throttle down. Is this normal? or do we have other way to control the fan speed as 8940 dont have awcc.

@studmonkey77 I was using the V5 with two Noctua NF-F12s.

Frankly, the V5 did an outstanding job...especially for the price. A great value. I just wanted to see if i could eek out even more cooling. Was it necessary? Certainly not. The V5 is a great solution.

I'm one of those idiots who doesn't mind spending a little more for stuff like this. for example, although the Fuma 2 is doing great, I currently I have an order in for two Scythe Wonder Snail 120s (1800 rpm version) to see if those can even do better than the Kaze Flex fans that come stock with the Fuma 2.

@Kelvin Lee - I know with AWCC the fans will ramp up as required. I'm not sure what you have controlling your fans without AWCC.  Hopefully someone else can have some insight on this for you - sorry.
