Rear XPS 8940 ports are Audio-OUT for speakers, not Audio-IN for a microphone.
Did you try the front port, right below the SD slot?
You do have to know what type plug is on your mic? You might need an adapter plug if it's not the right plug type for the port on front of PC.
You also have to turn the mic on and give it permission to use your apps on one of the Windows Sound and/or Privacy screens.
XPS 8940 uses Waves MaxxAudio software as the sound controller so you also have to enable the mic and set the volume on the Waves control panel. So make sure Waves loads at every boot, and is correctly configured.

Thank you for your reply we are operating Windows 11. the mic is the type that Dell used to provide with the computer
