XPS 8950, 450w power supply enough?
I just ordered (from Costco) an XPS 8950 i7 with 32mb ram, 512 m2 ssd and 1T HDD, RTX 3060TI graphics, and tray DVD. The 1T HDD is likely to be replaced by either a 1T m2 slot drive or 2 Samsung 860 1T ssd drives for storage. Unlike most of these systems, the Costco unit comes with the 450 watt psu instead of the 750 watt supply. The Nvidia web site says this graphics card should have a minimum 600 watt system psu.
Is the 450 watt in this system likely to be an issue requiring upgrade? I do not do any major gaming or photo work, mostly stock market programs (math and graphs) and an occasional movie, and background music from the Klipsch speakers. I couldn't say no to the $1199 price at the local warehouse, (and the 90 day return), but wonder if I have enough power?
Any advice would be appreciated!

1. No, since Dell built-it this way, it should be fine. IIRC, that smaller Power-Supply was a good/appropriate 12v rail-circuit for video cards.
2. Yes. Make the bootable C-Drive a M.2/NVMe SSD (480gb or larger) and then start adding 2.5inch SATA-3/600 SSDs as required for D-Drive and beyond.
I suggest you use the 1tb spinning-platter HDD somewhere else or at least outside the machine (like maybe in an external enclosure).

Standard 8950 psu is 460w, 750w, 1000w. No 450w afaik.
your spec assuming i7-12700k would work with 460w psu ONLY if you remove dvd and hdd from system and use ssd only.
if both hdd and dvd are included, basic online psu calculator estimates
Load Wattage: 495 W
Recommended PSU Wattage: 545 W
load wattage is the bare minimum to run typical real world applications not including benchmark tests.
if two m.2 nvme ssd and No hdd/dvd
Load Wattage: 460 W
Recommended PSU Wattage: 510 W
if sata ssd + nvme ssd, no hdd/dvd
Load Wattage: 456 W
Recommended PSU Wattage: 506 W

Thank you! I will check the box when I get it, maybe it is something as simple as Costco listing the wrong spec on their web site (not for the first time). I would hate to think that Costco would sell (or Dell would build) a computer with a power supply so far out of synch with the rest of the system, but stranger things have happened. Including the Costco flier showing a $1249 price, the Costco near my home offering it at $1399, and the Costco near work doing the same systems (5 in stock yesterday) at $1199. All for the same model and build.

One cannot trust Dell factory config to be 100% reliable in terms of what psu must be configured if this gpu is included. Dell does not test pc running typical applications in factory, I think based on track record. If pc has os imaged on ssd in factory and it boots to Windows in idle operation, it may pass the factory QC on its way to consumer. This though does not guarantee adequate power supply.
For reference Dell have been using totally inadequate basic pancake heatsink for high end cpu which barely passes idle boot QC but cannot handle real world applications thermal load. You would think Dell should have discovered this inadequacy and correct it before shipping, but no.

Thank you for all the feedback. I couldn't find a link on the Dell store front for an XPS powersupply as a DIY add in part. Is it posible to buy just the 750 watt supply from Dell?

Yes it is possible but Dell stock availability is a matter of supply chain. Dell has to get it from the psu makers first. User reported success of buying the 750w from Dell ($189.99+Tax shipping included) through chat, but your luck may differ from theirs. Then there is also the eBay seller option.

I have the 460w paired with a 3070 and I can verify that it gets all kind of errors with 4k or anytime you have two monitors. Should never have trusted the dell config

My 8950 has random freezes because of what i believe is the weak power supply. So i bought a 750w from 365supply.com in china...I had previously bought server PS's from them with no issues.
The unit arrived with busted fans. It was advertised as new for $200. Would cost probably $50 to send it back to them.
Then bought one on ebay for another $200. This one has noisy fans that sounds like the bearings are going out.
