XPS 8950, another question about adding Crucial ram

I just bought a XPS 8950 that came with 8GB DDR5, 1X8GB 4400MHz. I just bought from Crucial 16GB DDR5 4800MHz 1X16 GB. Will this work and give me 24GB or ram?  Or should I ditch the  8GB ram that came with the computer and buy another 16GB of ram to get 32GB of ram?

I’ll be your huckleberry.  My procedures will be:

  • Remove the 8 GB ram
  • Install the 2X16 GB ram in DIMM1 & DIMM2
  • Verify it works
  • Install the 8 GB ram in DIMM3
  • Verify it works

Ok, what happens if it doesn’t work?  Does the system crash?  Will it do anything to the computer, like screw up files etc.?

  • If it doesn’t work, remove  8 GB ram in DIMM3and put it into DIMM4.
  • Verify it works
  • If it doesn’t work, remove and put into circular file

Thanks, then it is really worth the try then.  My estimated arrival date is 6 July.

If not, it will not pass POST test. So either you see black screen or hear a few beeps, then reboot itself. System won't be able to crash cuz it never gets into a stable state to crash yet.

Lancelee, it works!  2X16GB in Dimm 1 &2 and 1x8GB in Dimm3 = 40 GB ram

Wow. Not even in July yet.  You truly have the luck to break the record to tell Dell and us something we don't think it is possible. Try to buy some lottery. Big items.

 How about the 24 G combo (1 x 16 + 1 x 8)?

I really wasn’t expecting it to work that easily.  I did not try the 8 GB & 16 GB configuration.ram40gbPicture1.jpg

Hi, I'm in similar position having just got an 8950 with 8GB and totally confused about what is acceptable RAM upgrade (I've seen the Dell configs).  I got 2x16GB Crucial intending to use them and EBay the 8GB.  But after reading the above thread, I tried two set-ups: (1) removed 8GB and installed 16GBs in slots 1& 2 (per Dell config), (2) 2x16 plus 8GB in slot 3 (as above). I used CPU-Z for the 2 configs above plus the as-delivered 1x8GB.  I don't really understand what the CPU-Z info is telling me but I think  DDR RAM speed is 2xDRAM frequency shown so 8GB & 32 GB run at 4200 MHz but 40GB at 4000MHz.  I would be grateful for advice on whether to stick with 2x16 or if OK to run at 40GB with the extra 8GB (would the difference in speed make much difference)? Thanks

Hi, this is  what worked for me : 2X16GB in Dimm 1 &2 and 1x8GB in Dimm3 = 40 GB ram.  So far so good.

Almost a year later so maybe it's now known, but I added 2 16GB (32) Crucial ram to the 2 8GB (16) ram Dell installed and have 48 showing. I have i5 12600k.  It may be that one 32GB stick and one 16GB stick won't work. The only problem I have is loss of speed from 4400MHz to 4000. I have each pair installed in same color slots. Have no idea if running dual channel.

Indeed this is very much likely as over the year the motherboard of XPS8950 has advanced with variations. So I assume the latter chipset is more compatible to DDR5.  The old (outdated) observations are for us early birds for XPS8950.

You can buy 64gb of crucial DDR5 for half the cost of 32 DDR5 from Dell.
